      Alex Yee wins first gold of Commonwealth Games for England after winning men’s triathlon after incredible sportsmanship

      ALEX YEE delivered on his promise to bring England a golden Triathlon start to the Commonwealth Games – and claimed it meant MORE than his Tokyo glory.The Olympic silver medalist showed his class to hunt down big rival Hayden Wilde of New Zealand in a stunning 5km run to win by 13 seconds.

      He said: “I’m just happy – it’s bizarre that it’s me that’s doing this.
      “I feel extremely grateful to be in this situation. I’m super proud to be the winner.
      “For me, this is the home Games. It’s the first time I’ve been able to race in front of my parents for a long time and at a major event – that means it’s probably my greatest achievement ever.”
      Yee was helped by the Kiwi serving a 10 second penalty for taking off his helmet before racking his bike at the end of the second stage.

      But the 24-year-old from Lewisham had already reeled in Wilde despite starting the run 15 seconds behind, with the Kiwi publicly acknowledging he had been beaten as they clasped hands just before the finish.
      Yee added: “I knew at the end of the first lap of the run that Hayden had the penalty.
      “I looked at the penalty board and I saw No 1. I thought I was No1 for a bit then I realised I wasn’t and that it was him.”

      Yee grabbed a St George’s flag on the run-in, turning to ask the fans gathered in Sutton Park to cheer him over the line, followed in by Wilde and bronze medal winner Matt Hauser of Australia, with England team-mate Daniel Dixon 12th.
      He added: “I definitely backed my run because I know the course so well having trained here.

      The proud Aussie has had to endure several setbacks in her career, from disappointing at the Rio 2016 Olympics to a three-year injury lay-off.
      Jenneke has suffered from hamstring, ankle and back injuries but was back with a bang at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon earlier this month.
      First the Aussie posted a time of 12.84 seconds in the heats – her fastest time in seven years.
      She then topped that season best with a personal best of 12.66 in the semi-final, but her 11th place was not enough to see her into the final.

      Creator of Peaky Blinders, 5,000 athletes and lawn bowls – all you need to know as Commonwealth Games hit Birmingham

      THE Commonwealth Games returns to England for the first time in 20 years today – and it promises to be a blockbuster festival of sport. More than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations will descend on Birmingham aiming to win 283 medal events across 19 sports in 11 jam-packed days.

      That includes the famous lawn bowls, or summer curling for you Winter Olympic fans, and three new sports making their debut at the Games – women’s T20 cricket, 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
      For the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games, there are more medal events for women (136) than for men (134) with 13 for mixed events.
      Remember, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete separately here, so Team GB Olympic team-mates could be pitted against each other in the pursuit for gold medals.

      The main venue of the 15 in use is the Alexander Stadium, which plays host to this evening’s opening ceremony – and the closing one on August 8.
      The last time England staged the Games was back in Manchester in 2002 with Melbourne, Delhi, Glasgow and the Gold Coast hosting the last four.
      What can I expect from the opening ceremony?
      Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight is the brains behind the opening ceremony which will include a 1,000-strong choir and the final leg of the 72-nation Queen’s Baton Relay.
      Brummie band UB40 are providing the backing track for this year’s Commonwealths alongside rappers Gilly G and Dapz On The Map.
      There is no Queen Elizabeth II to open the Games this time around so we will have to settle for Prince Charles instead.

      Who are the main British stars to watch?
      Five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny is arguable the biggest name in the entire Games, let alone for the England team.
      She is joined by fellow cycling legends Mark Cavendish and Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas, but they will be representing the Isle of Man and Wales respectively.
      Adam Peaty, the 100m breaststroke king, is battling back from a broken foot but hopes to retain his title while diver Jack Laugher will also be at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre aiming to add to his five Commonwealth golds.
      Max Whitlock is competing for England in the gymnastics while defending champ Katarina Johnson-Thompson is up in the heptathlon just weeks after the World Championships in Oregon.

      Laura Muir and Jake Wightman will be going for gold in the middle distances for Scotland after their medals in America this month.
      Sprint queen Dina Asher-Smith pulled out through a hamstring injury while there is also no Tom Daley or Jonny Brownlee.
      And there is no Northern Irish sprinter Leon Reid who won bronze in the Gold Coast either after he was banned following a security risk assessment.
      The 27-year-old was given a suspended sentence in February after being found guilty of allowing his flat to be used for the production of crack cocaine.

      Myles Hesson has played professional club basketball in Germany, France and Japan but will be back in his hometown for the 3×3.

      Amy Jones, meanwhile, will be part of the England T20 cricket team – she also turns out for the Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred so will have plenty of support from the fans.
      The medals are also local – having been selected through a competition held by Birmingham’s School of Jewellery with the winning design featuring a map of the city’s road and canal network.
      They have then been minted by Toye, Kenning and Spencer, a family-owned business that has been based in Birmingham for more than 200 years.
      Oh, and don’t forget the official Birmingham 2022 mascot – Perry – named after Perry Barr where the Alexander Stadium is.
      And the best international stars in action?
      Olympic champions Andre de Grasse (Canada, 200m & 4x100m), Kirani James (Grenada, 400m) and Shaunae Miller-Uibo (The Bahamas, 400m) have all confirmed their spot at the Games.
      However, there is still uncertainty over which Jamaican sprinters will compete so soon after the world champs.
      Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah could be involved, which would be a major boost for the organisers, fans and viewers alike – just not for their rivals.
      And Chad le Clos knows a top-three finish in the 50m butterfly will draw him level on a record-equalling 18 Commonwealth Games medals – although he has only just recovered from bronchitis which ruled him out of the world championships last month.

      ‘I’m sad that I won’t be there’ – Team England’s sprint star Dina Asher-Smith OUT of Commonwealth Games with injury

      But last Saturday night, she dramatically pulled up while running the third leg of the 4x100m relay final with British team-mates.
      Medical scans in the UK have shown damage to her left hamstring and it means she cannot compete in front of a home crowd next week.
      Asher-Smith, who was down to run the 100m and 4x100m relay at the Alexander Stadium, faces a race against time to be ready for the European Championships in Munich in August.
      The issue has denied her the chance to win a hat-trick of medals at three major track-and-field championships this summer.

      Reluctant to give any further details or information, the quietly-spoken Brummie has said publicly for the first time he came closing to ending his life last year.

      “I was racing, knowing I was hurt all the time, going to races knowing I wasn’t 100 per cent. I couldn’t do the Olympics for several reasons.
      “Everyone who has been around me – my agent, coach, family, girlfriend – have been the best support.
      “But during Covid I was stuck in America by myself. I love America, but I wanted to be with my family.
      “It was tough, man. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster.”
      While sidelined through injury, Hudson-Smith – who is based now in Florida – says he accumulated a “huge debt” through the American healthcare system.
      He added: “I didn’t have insurance. It’s America, man. It’s expensive.
      “My mum and girlfriend were like, ‘Give it a year out there.’ I was going to be an electrician instead.
      “And then obviously I was trying to get my Green Card, which got denied.
      “Things work in mysterious ways. Now I’ve got this medal.” 
      ASDA TO ATHLETICS
      It was back in the summer of 2014 when he first broke on the scene with a brilliant run at Glasgow that changed his life.
      Back then he was working in Asda supermarket and considered joining the army – something his mum did not know anything about at the time.
      After all the injury setbacks and near-misses, Hudson-Smith knew this Eugene event was his best chance and he came here in top form.
      It was on this same track in May where he posted a Diamond League meeting time of 44.35 seconds that eclipsed Iwan Thomas’s 25-year GB record by 0.01sec.
      American Michael Norman, who was on Hudson-Smith’s inside, won gold in 44.29 seconds while Grenadian Kirani James was second in 44.48 seconds.

      London working on plans to host Olympic Games for a record FOURTH time after roaring success of 2012

      LONDON Mayor Sadiq Khan said he is “working on plans” to land the Olympics in the capital for a FOURTH time.Los Angeles will join London as a three-time Olympics host in 2028, with the 2024 Games in Paris and the 2032 celebration based in Brisbane.

      But with the new International Olympic Committee host process seeing Games chiefs identifying a “preferred” candidate, Khan said he could see London spearheading another bid off the back of the success of 2012.
      Khan said: “We are working on a plan to bring the Olympic Games back to London.
      “We have got to make sure future Games are green – and our plan would be for the greenest Games ever.
      “The great thing about London is that we wouldn’t need to expend carbon on building a new stadium, cycle track or swimming pool because we’ve got all the kit already – so watch this space.”

      Khan was speaking after lighting an anniversary flame on Queen Elizabeth Park, marking 10 years since the 2012 Games.
      British Olympic Association bosses are reluctant to commit to a bid at this stage and it is evident that this is a Khan project rather than one being orchestrated by the BOA.
      They would have to woo the IOC, likely to be in new hands at the time of a decision on 2036, although the Brisbane decision was made last year, with an 11-year lead-up.

      Asher-Smith held off Niger runner Aminatou Seyni with a time of 22.02 seconds from lane three at Hayward Field.
      As expected, race favourite Shericka Jackson won the title – in a championship-record time of 21.45 seconds – while Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the 100m world champion, was second in 21.81 seconds.
