The Nueva Romareda – the New Romareda – is set to be completed in 2028 at an estimated cost of £117million. That should in theory give Real Zaragoza two years to play in their refurbished new home before fans from all over the globe arrive to catch a glimpse of their country in action in 2030. Instead, a banner has been erected in front of the rubble bank to block the eyesore view for players, fans and TV cameras alike. A total of 11 stadiums in nine Spanish cities are set to be used for the 2030 World Cup. The new Nou Camp, the redeveloped Bernabeu and the modern Metropolitano are the three flagship grounds. The home grounds of Espanyol, Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla are also on the initial list.And the Anoeta Stadium in San Sebastian, Malaga’s Estadio La Rosaleda, Estadio Gran Canaria of Las Palmas and the Estadio Riazor where Deportivo de La Coruna play are all in line – but each of their capacities are currently less than 40,000 so will need expanding to meet the criteria. The travelling Al-Nassr faithful made themselves known before the game had even kicked off by blaring out club anthems. SunSport snuck into the away end to get amongst the action – although our cover was blown as a result of being the only one not in Al-Nassr yellow. As the drums beat down and the chants sounded, my focus then turned to the game itself.My cynical preconceptions had me expecting 90 minutes of low-level football with the odd moment of brilliance from Ronaldo or Sadio Mane.It was the total opposite. In fact, the Champions League-winning pair struggled to impact the game for the most part. Mane looked pretty lost on the left wing while Ronaldo at times barely seemed bothered by what was going on in front of him. SunSport snuck into the Al-Nassr away endIt was a sea of Al-Nassr yellowThere were times when even getting himself back onside for an Al-Nassr counter attack looked to be a chore for the Portugal icon.At half-time, I was taken aback by the quality of football but lack of influence from Ronaldo and Mane. Now, it’s worth mentioning Ronaldo had been over 4,000 miles away playing against Scotland just 72 hours before this game.But for a player so competitive, who wants to reach 1,000 career goals, his lack of urgency at times left me shocked. As the half-time whistle blew, it was time to check out the footie scran. Now I wasn’t expecting Pukka Pies and a non-alcoholic pint but rather some traditional Saudi cuisine. Instead, only pastries, popcorn, cookies, coffee and various soda juices were on offer. And I was in my seat as the second half kicked off, but again Ronaldo and Mane struggled to make things happen.It was actually another Premier League winner in Aymeric Laporte who opened the scoring with a volley after a corner.As the ex-Manchester City defender reeled off in celebration, Ronaldo trotted over to enthusiastically join in.Laporte looked to have won the game until an Ali Alhassan own goal levelled on 90 minutes. Our footage shows Ronaldo retrieving the ball to the centre spot to try and spark a late fightback. And to Al-Nassr’s credit, that’s what they did. But amazingly the drama was not over just yet. Al-Shabab themselves won a dramatic penalty in the 13 MINUTE of added time. But Abderrazak Hamdallah failed to keep his nerve and hit the post – sparking a relieved celebration from Ronaldo – the most emotion he showed all night. The right-back starred for Sheffield United as they surprised the Prem in the 2019-20 campaign – their first in 12 years – by finishing in the top half of the table.Baldock was among their standout players as he registered a staggering 3,420 minutes played – the joint highest along with the likes of Declan Rice and Virgil van Dijk.The defender was keen to make the big step to the international stage with his grandmother’s homeland – and it didn’t take long until he shook hands with the Greek football federation (EPO) chiefs.However, a long and arduous paperwork slog stood in the way – with the then Sheffield United star claiming Covid-19 and Brexit slowed things down.Greece finally got the right-back they were begging for for years as Baldock made his debut on June 2, 2022 in a Nations League clash at Northern Ireland as a late substitute.It didn’t take long until the English-born ace owned the right flank at the back and impressive performances followed.Perhaps none compare to the Euro 2024 qualifier against France in June 2023 when Baldock did the unthinkable and kept Kylian Mbappe quiet for 104 MINUTES, despite being injured and playing through “unimaginable” pain.I still remember speaking to then-Greece manager Gus Poyet about his player’s stunning performance, and I will never forget the big smile the Chelsea legend had on his face.Poyet reminded me of a proud father as he took me through the injury hell the full-back endured before squaring up against perhaps the world’s best player for his country.A beaming Poyet told me: “Against the Republic of Ireland [three days beforehand] – and now that it is finished I can say it – after 20 minutes he had a very bad twist in his ankle, very bad. I love the country and I will fight for every success”Baldock never played for England at any level, but he always competed like a lion and he proved it on Sunday in his last ever match when he started for Panathinaikos, whom he joined in the summer, against eternal rivals Olympiacos in perhaps the most intense derby in Europe.He served his team with honour as he helped them pick up a valuable point in a goalless draw against their in-form foes, who had just played their best game of the season with a 3-0 win over Braga in the Europa League a few days earlier.He only managed 12 caps for Greece before his sudden and tragic death at the age of 31 on Wednesday in Athens.But his fighting spirit and charisma at right-back with the white and blue, as well as his remarkable run in the Premier League and the Championship, show that he is leaving a legacy behind for many Greek and English fans to look up to.
