Which club suits Liam Delap best out of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea ahead of huge transfer fight for in-demand striker

WITH just five Premier League games remaining this season, Ipswich Town are destined for the drop.Should they lose to Newcastle on Saturday, the Tractor Boys will be relegated back to the Championship.Liam Delap is set to leave Ipswich this summerCredit: ReutersThe £30m striker is being linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Man UtdCredit: GettyAnd that will almost guarantee the departure of sought-after forward Liam Delap amid interest from some of England’s top clubs.Delap joined Ipswich from Manchester City last summer for just £20million.And he will become available for just £30m if the Tractor Boys go down thanks to a relegation clause. The 22-year-old has managed 14 goal contributions in 32 Premier League games this term.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLAnd his impressive form has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United over the last year. But which club would be the best fit for him? SunSport has looked at what makes him so good and what he would bring to each team.MOVEMENT OFF THE LAST LINEIt’s fair to say that the performance and output that we have seen from Delap this season for Ipswich has taken plenty of people by surprise. He spent the previous campaign on loan with Hull City in the Championship and, although he played well, his form did not suggest that he would take the Premier League by storm in the way that he has. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSOne of the biggest surprises for many has been the movement that Delap has shown on the last line to create space and separation for himself. When Ipswich are in the attacking phase, we often see Delap covered by two or three defensive players.Man Utd and Arsenal in Matheus Cunha transfer battle with Wolves star ready to make summer moveBut he routinely makes clever runs that give him the advantage over the opposition. His movement is very intelligent but it’s the timing of these runs that really makes an impact and allows Delap to create space for himself.Delap’s movement off the last line helps to create plenty of space for both himself and his team-matesIn the above example, we see a clever movement from Delap where he first creates the attack before timing his arrival into space to finish comfortably. He picks up the ball and drives forward before releasing it wide. The forward then moves into the space to pick up the cross and finish first time. The club that would most benefit from this specific part of Delap’s profile is Chelsea. The Blues have seen their form dip dramatically across the second half of the season and with that Cole Palmer has suffered. To get the best out of Palmer, Chelsea need to add a striker with the movement profile of Delap. The former Man City star can attempt clever runs to make the most of the quality passes we usually see from Palmer.By adding a striker with the profile of Delap to their team for next season, Chelsea will be taking a player with the presence, athleticism and intelligent movement to really help them break down teams that sit in a deeper defensive block.Delap would naturally push defensive lines back and provide space for Palmer to occupy in behind, but he is also capable of receiving and linking the play around him.Cole Palmer has not had a striker playing with him this season who he can rely on to make runs in behindChelsea need to add a modern profile of striker for next season and Delap should be high on their list.INTELLIGENT MOVEMENT IN THE AREAModern strikers who thrive on running and attacking space behind the defensive line often struggle with their movement in tighter spaces, including the penalty area. This is not the case with Delap. One of the most interesting aspects of his development with Ipswich this season has been with his movement to create separation within the opposition penalty area.He has developed into an instinctive striker with excellent timing when looking to attack balls in the area.Delap has the traditional size and shape of a target man and as such you would expect him to be strong when attacking crosses. It is his movement, anticipation and the timing of his first move though that makes him really effective in the area.He makes strong runs across the defender to attack space and has a tendency to arrive at the right time for the cross.Delap is able to read the pass before it’s madeIn the above example, Delap is initially isolated as the only Ipswich player in the Aston Villa penalty area.As the ball is worked wide the man in possession shifts the ball and drives across a good low cross. As soon as the wide player started to shift his feet, Delap read the intention with a clever run across the face of the defender to finish past the goalkeeper.Out of the top teams linked with Delap it’s Arsenal who would most benefit from adding a player with this profile. The Gunners generate a high volume of crosses but their striker options are not good enough to take advantage. The likes of Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus – when they were fit – rarely make the most of these chances. If Arsenal were to add a striker like Delap to really attack the ball and show clever movement, then suddenly the volume of crosses that they generate will be put to far better use.The Champions League semi-finalists do not need a striker who will provide value in build-up – but they do need someone who can finish.Kai Havertz sometimes struggles to time his runs correctlyHere, we see a moment where Arsenal have worked the ball into a strong position. Havertz is the striker looking to attack the cross but the timing of his run is too early, allowing the opposition defenders to react and block the eventual shot.Arsenal have one glaring hole in their squad and that is at the No9 position. They need to add an option in that area this summer and a domestic option like Delap should appeal to their top brass.PACE TO STRETCH THE PITCHOne of the stand-out things about Delap this year has been his strength when attacking space behind defensive lines. For the most part, Ipswich have faced teams with more possession of the ball and as such the opposition have pushed their defence higher. This has, in turn, meant that Ipswich have generally had space to counter attack with more direct passes, releasing Delap into space. In the modern game, more and more teams are looking for tall and powerful strikers who have the pace and ability to run behind and force the opposition to defend in space. That fits the profile of Delap nicely. He can stretch the space and really cause danger for his team when they are trying to attack quickly from deeper areas. In this match, Delap showed his ability to peel off the defender to create space for himself before then making quick runs to attack the space. His team-mates know they can take possession of the ball and then quickly hit forward passes to release him into space.Man Utd, under Ruben Amorim, are in desperate need of a striker who fits this profile. They thought they had this already in Rasmus Hojlund, but while Delap has shown real development in his game across this season, it would be fair to say that Hojlund has gone backwards.Indeed, when you watch United play they are clearly missing a forward player who can be effective running the channels and giving them an option to attack space behind the defensive line. This allows opposition teams to squeeze the game and to play higher, making it more difficult for United to effectively build their attack.Rasmus Hojlund is not effective when it comes to running the channelsWe see an example of this here as United play a direct pass into the channel to release Hojlund. He does not have the power or the pace, however, to make the most of the opportunity and allows two Man City players to catch him.CONCLUSIONThere is no doubt that Delap will be on the move this summer. There is no value for the player or for Ipswich in keeping the striker for a season in the Championship. The only question is where will he go?While he would no doubt benefit Arsenal and United, Chelsea could gain most by landing the man touted as a future England star.Read More on The SunIt can be argued that Delap could be the player to help things click for Chelsea and take them to the next level. If he can get the absolute best out of Cole Palmer, and vice versa, then surely the Blues will return to their absolute best.Delap could be a huge addition to any top Prem clubCredit: PA More

Champions League ‘considering THREE huge format changes next season’ – after Arsenal complained

UEFA are considering three major format changes for the Champions League next season – including one which comes after a complaint from Arsenal. The Champions League adopted its new Swiss model league phase this season, but could already make changes before the next campaign kicks off.Uefa have proposed three major rule changes for next seasonCredit: GettyOne change comes after a concern raised by ArsenalCredit: RexAccording to German outlet Bild, three new changes are being considered for the 2025/26 campaign with a meeting scheduled to discuss the proposals. The first comes after Arsenal raised concerns that they were playing most of their knockout game second legs away from home.Uefa are reportedly mulling over a change of their rules that would mean teams finishing higher in the league phase will get the home advantage in the second-leg of the knockout stages. At the moment, teams who finish in the top eight of the league phase bypass a play-off round and automatically play their last 16 second-leg at home.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLHowever, quarter-finals and semi-finals don’t receive the same treatment.Arsenal had to play the second-leg of their quarter-final clash with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, and will have to play away for the second-leg of their upcoming semi-final against PSG too.Arsenal finished third in the league phase and feel they should be rewarded for that with most football fans accepting that there is a slight advantage to playing the second leg at home.By comparison, Real Madrid (11th) and PSG (15th) both finished outside the top eight and had to win a play-off game to advance into the last 16.Most read in FootballArsenal played their quarter-final second leg away at the BernabeuCredit: GettyThe Gunners will play the second leg of their PSG semi-final in Paris tooCredit: GettyCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSUefa are also considering removing extra-time. Europe’s footballing body are thinking about sending ties that finish level straight to penalties to ease player workload amidst widespread concern for increasing injuries.Ally McCoist explains the new Champions League format The final proposed change is regarding teams from the same domestic league facing one another.Prior to this season’s new format domestic rivals couldn’t be drawn against each other in the group stage or the last 16.But the new league phase system only stops teams from playing their compatriots during the initial league phase and not during the last 16.That meant that this year’s tournament saw PSG face fellow Ligue 1 side Brest in the play-offs, while Bayern Munich played Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid took on fierce rivals Atletico Madrid in the round of 16.Uefa are thought to think that these types of fixtures are not as attractive to fans and broadcasters, so are considering re-implementing their previous protection rules. The three proposed rules are set to be discussed in Munich next month at a meeting between The Club Competitions Committee, one day before this year’s final.Uefa are considering scrapping extra-timeCredit: RexBayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen faced off in the last 16Credit: AP More

Inside Prem side’s sister club where fan attacked player with CORNER FLAG with Solskjaer a victim of amazing rise

FROM a fan hitting an opposition goalkeeper with a corner flag to beating Istanbul giants Besiktas – Southampton’s sister club in Turkey have come a long way.It will be no consolation to fans of the managerless, already-relegated Saints, but owners Sport Republic have overseen an impressive return to the top flight for their Turkish outfit, Goztepe.A Goztepe fan whacked a rival goalkeeper with a corner flag in a fit of rage in 2022Credit: Twitter / @cicibilgiliGoztepe fans are renowned for being some of the most passionate in the worldCredit: GettyAnd Southampton loanees Juan, a striker from Brazil, and Kuryu Matsuki, a Japan Under-23 midfielder, have been part of Goztepe’s success this season. Both played in this month’s 3-1 win at Besiktas – now managed by former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – which earned Goztepe a place in the semi finals of the Turkish Cup for the first time in nearly half a century. The game brought back memories of their 1960s and early 1970s heyday when the leading club in Turkey’s third biggest city, Izmir, regularly gave the big boys from Istanbul a bloody nose. And the Goztepe fans’ passion is making it a thrilling ride.READ MORE SPORT STORIESRasmus Ankersen, Sport Republic co-founder and Goztepe chairman, said: “The intensity is something you just don’t see in modern football.“The fanbase is very emotional and very aggressive.“The volatility of it – It’s like playing with rocket fuel.“When everything goes in the same direction, as it has for big parts of this year, it’s unbelievable. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS“But when it’s not, the pressure the fans can put on their own players from the stands is huge.”Sport Republic bought 70 per cent of Goztepe from oil tycoon Mehmet Sepil in August 2022, seven months after their takeover at Southampton.Inside Prem side’s sister club where fan attacked player with CORNER FLAG and ultras boot off over pre-season resultsThe London-based firm, co-founded by former Saints chairman Henrik Kraft and backed by Serbian billionaire Dragan Solak, became the first foreign investors ever to take control of a Turkish club.Goztepe, who sank as low as the fifth tier in the 2000’s, had just been relegated after a five-year stay in the Super Lig.Things did not start well for the new regime.Manager Ahmet Balci was sacked after a handful of games. in the first half so that ambulance crews could attend to fans injured during clashes in the stands. But then a Goztepe fan invaded the pitch, plucked out one of the corner flags and started thrashing and reach the promotion play-offs.But they fell at the first hurdle and Dag left the club in the summer, with Radomir Kokovic promoted from within to take charge. The Serb lasted less than four months and Sport Republic turned to Stanimir Stoilov in November 2023.Former Bulgaria international Stoilov had an impressive coaching pedigree, especially for someone managing a second-tier side in Turkey. He had enjoyed historic success in the first of two spells at Levski Sofia that came at either end of a long career that included taking charge of the Bulgaria and Kazakhstan national teams. After Stoilov’s arrival, Goztepe lost only two more league games for the rest of the season and their second-place finish earned them a return to the top flight.TURNING OF THE TIDEBefore the home games at the 20,000-capacity Gursel Aksel that were crucial to promotion, Turkish pop star Levent Yuksel led the crowd in spine-tingling renditions of his famous song Med Cezir (“Tide”).It has become Goztepe’s version of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, a love song about loyalty to a partner repurposed to express devotion to a football team. The supporters sing about the highs and lows and after admitting “There’s no way to give up on these tides”, they raise the volume.“My storm, my disaster, my longing,” they yell, “it’s not enough – making love is not enough, how pretty your violence is, oh how sweet your kindness, I want to love you more and more, I’ll follow you until I die and never let you go”.But it’s not just the Altay goalkeeper who has tasted the other side of Goztepe fans’ passion. The joy of promotion was quickly forgotten after a minor setback last summer.Ankersen said: “We lost our first friendly game to Charlton during our training camp in Slovenia.“There were big protests against us for not doing more transfers… I had to do a press conference to calm everyone down.”There was more unrest when Goztepe had to play their first home game back in the top flight on a neutral ground because their own pitch was not in good enough condition.Ankersen said: “We did not have a CEO at the time so the Chief Financial Officer was the leading executive. We lost our first friendly game to CharltonRasmus Ankersen“Our fans still travelled in huge numbers and there were 10,000 people all jumping up and down, calling for him to leave the club.”But confidence was pretty high that Goztepe would make a good fist of the Super Lig, with a top-10 finish as the target. The gap between the top two tiers in Turkey in terms of quality and financial might is not nearly as big as in England and other countries.”A REVELATION”Sport Republic and Stoilov have built the second youngest squad in the league and made them play with a kind of English-style intensity and physicality that is unusual in Turkish football. They have also focused on set-pieces and become one of the most potent teams in the world from dead-ball situations. In Goztepe’s second game back in the Super Lig, an equaliser in the 95th minute by on-loan Brazilian striker Romulo earned a morale-boosting 2-2 draw from 2-0 down at home to Fenerbahce, managed by Jose Mourinho. Then in late November, Stoilov’s side won 4-2 at Besiktas and a good spell took them as high as fourth in the table.Observers feel Goztepe have been unlucky in the current run of 11 league games without a win which has ended their bid for a top-four place. But there was nothing fortunate about their 3-1 win at Besiktas.Solskjaer’s side, which included former Arsenal, Liverpool and England star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, took a first-half lead. Before a recent lull, Goztepe had been as high as fourth in the Super LigCredit: GettyBut the game turned on a professional foul on Goztepe’s Juan by Besiktas centre back Tayyip Sanuc, which earned him a red card in the 36th minute.Romulo – described as “a revelation” by Ankersen – scored direct from the resulting free kick,With less than 15 minutes to go, ex-West Ham full back Arthur Masuaku handled the ball in the penalty area and Romulo converted the penalty.Soon afterwards Romulo, on loan from Athletico Paranaense, completed his hat-trick with a deft lob.On Thursday, Goztepe will travel to Trabzonspor for the semi final as they aim to win the Cup for the first time since back-to-back successes in 1969 and 1970.If the club went on to win the trophy, they would have the chance to relive another exploit of their glorious past.In 1968-69, Goztepe became the first Turkish club to reach the  last four of a European competition when they went all the way to the semi finals of the Fairs Cup, the forerunner of the Uefa Cup that was in turn rebranded as the Europa League.A cup triumph would earn them a place in the play-off for Uefa’s second-tier tournament.Southampton fans, whose FA Cup win of 1976 put them on the map, will hope that Sport Republic can bring the good times back to St Mary’s, too.Read More on The SunAnd that the Saints avoid the fate of Sport Republic’s other club, French side Valenciennes, who are currently in the third tier after relegation last season. As Goztepe’s anthem says, fans have no choice but to ride the waves
