Cash-strapped Barcelona ‘lose out on MILLIONS with contract blunder’ after Nico Gonzalez’s £50m transfer to Man City

CASH-STRAPPED Barcelona reportedly lost out on MILLIONS from Nico Gonzalez’s £50million Manchester City switch due to a contract blunder. The Spanish midfielder, 23, completed a stunning deadline day move to the Etihad from Porto.Barcelona missed out on millions when Nico Gonzalez joined Man City from PortoCredit: PAThe ace came through the ranks at La MasiaCredit: GettyBefore joining the Portuguese side in 2023, Gonzalez came through the ranks at Barcelona’s La Masia academy. He made 37 appearances before being sold for £7million to Porto as Barca looked to combat their dire financial situation. However, the Catalans made sure to include a clause that entitled them to 40 per cent of his next fee.Despite that, ESPN claims Barcelona will now receive just 20 per cent of Gonzalez’s £50m.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLThat’s because before selling him to City, Porto snapped up half of Barcelona’s clause for only £2.5m.It means instead of receiving £20m as part of Gonzalez’s move to City, Barca have banked just £10m.Including Porto’s cheeky clause cash-in, it makes for a grand total of £12.5m — £7.5m less than the Spaniards were expecting to rake in.Club chiefs are sure to be even more furious as their lack of money saw them potentially miss out on an even greater figure. Most read in FootballJOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUSBarcelona made sure to also include a buy-back clause, worth £25m, in Gonzalez’s Porto move 18 months ago. They could have — in theory — re-signed him for that figure before flogging him to City for £50m — making for a cool £25m profit.Henry reveals sympathy for Pep Guardiola after own marriage split with Man City boss ‘not usual self’But Porto’s earlier decision to pay £2.5m for Gonzalez’s sell-on clause saw that option also become invalid. After joining City, the playmaker said: “This is the perfect opportunity for me at this stage of my career. I am 23 and I want to test myself in England. There’s no better club than Manchester City for me to do that. “Look at the squad they have here … it’s unbelievable, full of world‑class players. There isn’t a footballer in the world who would not want to be part of this setup.“I know the reputation Pep has and I cannot wait to work with him. In fact, I am honoured he wants me to play in his team. I am truly excited. Why Marcus Rashford could be perfect fit for Aston Villa and how £25m Dorgu is exactly the player Amorim’s Man Utd need

IT was a hectic winter transfer deadline day for the Premier League and Europe as clubs scrambled to get deals done before the 11pm deadline on Monday. The saga of the window was Mathys Tel’s loan move to Tottenham from Bayern Munich which went through following a call from Ange Postecoglou after he had earlier rejected Daniel Levy.Marcus Rashford could prove to be a worthwhile gamble for Aston VillaCredit: Instagram / avfcofficialPatrick Dorgu should go straight into the Man Utd teamCredit: GettyMathys Tel can be a great signing for Tottenham thanks to his profileCredit: RexOther deals saw Manchester City take their January spending to more than £175million as they confirmed the arrival of Nico Gonzalez from Porto, while Evan Ferguson became the latest striker down at West Ham.There were also blockbuster deals completed before deadline day, including Manchester United’s acquisition of Patrick Dorgu and Aston Villa’s quadruple haul of stars including Marcus Rashford. But you may be wondering how these deals might change the tactical makeup of these respective clubs.Well fear not, because SunSport’s tactical guru Dean Scoggins is here to break down the nitty-gritty of the deals so you don’t have to.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLMarcus RashfordFormer England star Rashford was announced by Villa on the penultimate day of the transfer window.Unai Emery rates the 27-year-old highly, so much so that he has sanctioned Villa paying 75 per cent of his wages while also getting a £40m option to buy in the deal. This deal is intriguing to say the least, as Villa are one of the few teams he can fit into tactically. Some of the clubs he was linked to play short football round the edge of the area, but that is a style unsuitable for Rashford. Most read in FootballJOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUSBut Aston Villa’s counter-attacking system should be a nice fit for both parties.Rashford has just shy of 200 goal contributions from his time at Man Utd, and it is a calculated risk from Villa to take on a fallen star who could reignite his stuttering career.Marcus Rashford says joining Aston Villa from Man Utd was an easy decisionSo with the extra additions of Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi on deadline day, how could this all play into Villa’s system? The Midlands side are relatively normal in their set-up, which is a 4-2-3-1 that transitions into a box midfield in the opposition half. But what’s important for Rashford is how they seek to be lightning fast on the counter-attack after goading teams into pressuring them. The likes of the injured Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa play the ball around at the back while supported by so-called “press resistant” players in midfield such as Youri Tielemans.Aston Villa move to a box midfield when in the oppositions halfThis helps them to keep the ball and sustain attacksWhen the opposition press has pushed high, the defenders will then play fast and direct passes straight down the middle, which has worked to blistering effect against clubs such as Man City and Arsenal.Rashford’s role involves one of the wingers moving inside to a No.10 position on one side to receive the ball before playing another straight pass to a team-mate.His out to in runs have proven themselves effective at United over the years, and if they can be translated to Villa then they should work a treat with their direct style.Thomas Tuchel may even take some notes for his England squad, with the possible axis of Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers and Rashford all working in tandem with their club side and on the international stage. In build up they look to bring the press on to themThe likes of Pau Torres or Ezri Konza play fast balls through the middle to get up fieldThis allows stars like Morgan Rogers to get on the ballRashford’s out to in runs could prove devastating for Villa on these attacksThis is not to mention new signings Donyell Malen, Asensio, and Jacob Ramsey, who all fit the profile Emery likes for his system.Off the ball, Villa will counter-press but are more than happy to retreat back towards their goal.Watkins’ hard work is key to this defence from the start, but some of the criticism levelled at Rashford by Ruben Amorim at Man Utd was due to a perceived lack of effort. That seems anathema to an Emery system, but Rashford seems to have convinced Villa and Emery that he will be willing to put in the hard yards to ensure their gamble pays off.Patrick DorguDorgu was a £25m plus £4m in add-ons signing from Ligue 1 side Lecce, identified to come in and fit the Amorim profile for a dynamic left wing-back.While at the age of 20 Dorgu has plenty of time to grow, he is tactically a perfect fit for Amorim’s 3-4-3.What the system has been missing is a ball-carrying attacker, with only Amad Diallo really able to fit that idea.Amorim’s system is built around players being able to carry the ball forwards and driving into space rather than relying on passing patterns.Dorgu’s key stats, including goals, progressive carries, distance travelled and the speed he does it at, he appears to be a tailor-made for Amorim’s system, a bit like Geovany Quenda currently at Sporting. At six foot two inches tall, Dorgu is almost a copy of a 17-year-old on the left-hand side.Dorgu has also showed his proficiency by scoring goals on the right side, meaning he is also a flexible asset for Amorim.Despite some possible defensive misgivings at Lecce, Dorgu should go straight into the Man Utd starting XI ahead of Diogo Dalot.Mathys TelHarry Kane gave a glowing review of Tel after his switch to Tottenham was announced, and he is certainly one of the most exciting talents in world football at the moment.Spurs have forked out a decent bit of dosh to get this deal over the line, including a loan fee of above £8m and paying his full wages.Tel is said to have been keen to move where he would get the most minutes, and with a loan to buy option also inserted into his deal it is a good move for all parties. For a forward, Ange Postecoglou style is more exciting than the likes of Man Utd – who were also interested in Tel – and Tel can ultimately fit the system very well.He is able to play anywhere across the attack, which will be a very useful addition to Spurs given their injury crisis.Tel is big, powerful, strong with both feet and importantly quick on the ball, attributes which are favoured by Postecoglou. There is no doubt he has bags of ability. But the main question mark will be how hard is Tel going to work in a notoriously high octane system at Spurs.Nico GonzalezFollowing their 5-1 defeat at Arsenal, Man City went out and splashed £60m on 23-year-old Gonzalez in the hopes they can alleviate the absence of Rodri. The tag of Rodri replacement places huge pressure on him, particularly in a team which has not performed at its best this season. No one in world football is as good as Rodri in that role, but if you are looking for a player around Europe to try and put into that profile, then Gonzalez certainly has that.Gonzalez, like previous names on this list, is a big, powerful and combative midfielder who is a strong runner and who always manages to get his toe on the ball. The La Masia graduate also has this dynamic ability to get his foot across to win the ball back before rolling to then drive the ball upfield. While a smaller player may be knocked off the ball, his size in itself is a key weapon in his locker.Gonzalez also likes to get in the box, so don’t be surprised to see him pop up in the attacking third at times. But ultimately he should go a long way to solving many of the structural issues City had against Arsenal.Evan FergusonFerguson is the 54th striker West Ham have signed under the ownership of David Sullivan. The 20-year-old was handed his debut at Brighton by Graham Potter, scoring six goals in 19 games in his breakout season. His main issues have come down to fitness, particularly with his ankles after missing 11 months out of the last 18 through injury, playing just 12 Premier League games this season before another knock. But tactically speaking, Ferguson goes against the grain of West Ham signings of the past where a big name forward was added without them really fitting the system.Ferguson is a nice all-rounder forward. He is a solid seven out of ten in several aspects, while too many other signings were too specialised at one thing. The Irish ace has been behind one of the most of tactically adaptable players you can find in Danny Welbeck, but with West Ham lacking a focal point for their attack Ferguson should improve them dramatically.READ MORE SUN STORIESJarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus are both wonderful talents, but need a foil to play off of in the final third if they are to truly excel, like what the crocked Michail Antonio provided them with.If Ferguson’s fitness issues can be resolved, then West Ham fans have the right to be really excited about this deal.Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme – Sun Club. Former referee Dermot Gallagher spots VAR ‘optical illusion’ in Chelsea’s controversial goal against West Ham

DERMOT GALLAGHER pointed out a flaw with the VAR system… it can be littered with “optical illusions”.The former match official was appearing on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch to discuss two major incidents in Chelsea’s controversial win over West Ham.Dermot Gallagher called this still image an ‘optical illusion’Dermot Gallagher believes it was the correct decision to allow Chelsea’s goal to standIn the build up to Pedro Neto’s all-important second-half equaliser, Jarrod Bowen was bundled over by Levi Colwill. No foul was given and play waved on, as Chelsea went up the other end to score. But the goal itself was also mired in controversy after Marc Cucurella was adjudged to NOT be offside.Neto whipped the ball across with the left-back in an offside position.READ MORE SPORT STORIESHowever, there was much debate as to whether Marc Guiu got a flick on the ball en-route to Cucurella. If he had, then Cucurella would absolutely have been offside. The ball came across to Neto, who smashed the ball into the back of the net. After a VAR check, the goal was allowed to stand, with Guiu therefore not adjudged to have got a flick. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSGallagher – who admitted the collision between Bowen and Colwill could perhaps have been a free-kick for West Ham – said it looked as though Guiu got a touch based on a still photo. However, he called it an optical illusion as he pointed to the fact you couldn’t see a touch when watching the video.Chelsea vs West Ham: Player Ratings BreakdownGallagher said: “If he touches it, without doubt Cucurella is offside.”But you look at it, there’s one angle that I think is an optical illusion…”It looks as though he touches it but it’s a still photo and I think still photos can be deceiving.”You look at it and there’s no evidence he’s touched the ball.”So I feel he’s duty bound to allow the goal.”Gallagher went on to admit while the foul on Bowen should have been given, enough time had passed between that incident and the goal to not go back and check it.On the goal, the Premier League commented: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as there was no factual evidence that Guiu made contact with the ball in the build-up, therefore there was no offside offence.”CHELSEA PLAYER RATINGS: Levi Colwill’s sluggish performance saved by Pedro Neto’s best showing in a Blues shirtCHELSEA capitalised on the failures of their rivals to move up to fourth in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over West Ham.A host of changes from Enzo Maresca upped the tempo in the second half, and they paid dividends with Pedro Neto driving home an equaliser in the 63rd minute after a shot from Fernandez.Jarrod Bowen had capitalised on a Levi Colwill error to fire West Ham ahead.Fans grew optimistic as the home side grew into the game, which culminated in a deflected Cole Palmer effort sending the Bridge into raptures as they went 2-1 up.Here is how SunSport’s Lloyd Canfield rated Chelsea’s performance.Filip Jorgensen – 7It would’ve been a tough task to disappoint Chelsea fans after what they have seen from Robert Sanchez in recent weeks. There wasn’t an awful lot he could do about the opener, and actually made some pretty good stops to prevent his side being more than one goal down at the halfway point. Those saves proved vital, and he should expect to start against Brighton up next.Reece James – 6His crosses from the right were good throughout the first half, but there was no one clinical enough in the box to grab him an assist.Strong defensively, but ultimately didn’t have much to do in that aspect with Chelsea dominant on the flanks.Tosin Adarabioyo – 7Strong in the air and pretty good across the ground.Perhaps could have done a little more to prevent Bowen opening the scoring as he seemed to stand and watch him shoot, but overall was good and is growing into a good, consistent Premier League centre half. His vital block in added time might well have been the difference between three points and one.Levi Colwill – 3His awful backpass rolledBowen in perfectly to give the Hammers the lead just before first half-time.A lousy and sluggish performance improved in the second half after his side took the lead, but he was fortunate not to cost his side points tonight.Marc Cucurella – 7Inverted well from left back into midfield in a role that looks made for him, he was strong in his tackles and good in the air from start to finish.Got into dangerous positions going forward, but couldn’t add the finishing touches to his game on this occasion.Moises Caicedo – 7Tenacious tackling and energy is what the home fans have become accustomed to seeing from their Ecuadorian destroyer.Glimpses of that in the first half extended into a mature and controlled second 45 minutes where he looked to have Mo Kudus’ number.Enzo Fernández – 5Missed a huge chance to give Chelsea the lead which he rolled past the left hand post from a few yards out.It was his blocked effort which bounced out for Neto to level the scoring, but overall the Argentine looked a bit off the pace in midfield.Noni Madueke – 4Perhaps should’ve had a goal and assist in the first half an hour as he was set up by Nicolas Jackson and put the ball on a plate for Fernandez, but neither chance was converted. His best moment of the second half was when he bodied the referee, before being subbed for Christopher Nkunku.Cole Palmer – 7A quiet first half had the travelling fans comparing him to Andy Irving, but he soon showed them up.Almost scored a free-kick similar to the one we saw against Brighton this season, but it was well saved by Alphonse Areola. It was his deflected effort that put his side in the lead as he grew into the game more and more.Jadon Sancho – 4His quick feet made him a threat on the left-hand side in the first half, but again his end product or lack thereof would’ve cost Chelsea if his replacement didn’t bail them out.Was subbed five minutes into the second half for Pedro Neto.Nicolas Jackson – 3Showed some promising signs early on with a good ball into Noni Madueke, who narrowly missed the goal.Aside from that, he looked like a striker utterly devoid of any confidence and was poor before being hooked for 18-year-old Marc Guiu.SUBSMarc Guiu (Nicolas Jackson, 51) – 5Didn’t really do a lot wrong or right after coming on for Nicolas Jackson.Certainly looks more confident in the Conference League, but Premier League minutes in the tank will do him good.Pedro Neto (Jadon Sancho, 51) – 8His best performance in a Chelsea shirt since he joined.A composed finish saw him level the scoring before more great work in the build up sawPalmer rifle home a deflected effort.Great energy, work rate, and end product from Maresca’s own Portuguese magnifico.Malo Gusto (Reece James, 60) – 6Was energetic and strong after replacing captain Reece James, also playing a part in the goal that put his side in the lead. His passing was good and he looked more like the player who became a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge last campaign.Christopher Nkunku (Noni Madueke, 60) – 5Did a job for the team out of position on the left-hand side in Jadon Sancho’s position. Made another stunning save two minutes from the half-time interval, stopping a deflected Savinho shot from close range. Powerless to stop Erling Haaland’s 55th-minute header from briefly levelling the scores.Jurrien Timber – 6Didn’t offer his usual attacking threat going forward but was solid defensively. Picked up a pointless yellow breaking up a harmless counter-attack in the 24th minute. Almost scored late in the second half.William Saliba – 5Didn’t have much to do in the first half but won all his aerial battles in the first 45 minutes. Marshalled the defence well early in the second period but was embarrassingly outjumped and outmuscled by Haaland for City’s equaliser – a major flaw of his that continues to be exposed.Gabriel Magalhaes – 6Like his defensive partner, he was seldom called into action in the first half. Dominant in the air in his battles with Haaland, who he trolled after Odegaard’s goal.Myles Lewis-Skelly – 8Continues to endear himself to the Emirates faithful with composure and tenacity beyond his years as he brilliantly floated between left back and midfield. Put real daylight between the two sides with a thumping finish just after the hour mark. Fired the Gunners back into the lead in the 57th minute with a deflected shot from outside the box.Martin Odegaard – 7Was in the right place at the right time to benefit from the aftermath of an uncharacteristic Manuel Akanji error and break the deadlock. Was at the heart of everything good the north Londoners did going forward.Declan Rice – 6Combative, as always, in the middle of the park and played a role in the home side taking the lead, teeing up Havertz who squared the ball to Odegaard.Leandro Trossard – 6Was particularly lively on the left in the first half, giving Matheus Nunes a real run for his money. His end product, however, wasn’t the best.Gabriel Martinelli – 6Lively on the right wing in the early goings. Found the back of the net in the fifth minute after some beautiful play from Odegaard but was needlessly offside. Forced a good save out of Ortega with a rasping effort in the 68th minute.Kai Havertz – 6Lively early doors, testing Stefan Ortega with a tame shot in the first minute. Teed up Odegaard for a tap in a few moments later. Missed a golden opportunity to double the lead in the 25th minute, dragging the ball wide with the goal at his absolute mercy. Made amends for his howler by finishing an even harder chance in the 76th minute. He well and truly needed that as he looked absolutely devoid of confidence.SUBSEthan Nwaneri – 83 (on for Trossard) – 7Put the cherry on top of the cake with an outrageous effort in second-half stoppage time.Mikel Merino – 83 (on for Odegaard) – 5Raheem Sterling – 89 (on for Kai Havertz ) – N/ARiccardo Calafiori 89 (on for Lewis-Skelly) – N/ARead more on all the latest Arsenal news.Unlock even more award-winning articles as The Sun launches brand new membership programme – Sun Club.
