Barcelona set to be BANNED from fielding two stars for the rest of the season as government get involved

BARCELONA stars Dani Olmo and Pau Victor face being booted out of the club’s squad for the rest of the season – after Spanish league bosses uncovered an alleged financial ruse to allow them to play.LaLiga okayed the further registration of the pair in January after the club announced the sale of 475 VIP seats in the rebuilt Camp Nou – still due to open before the end of this season – to a number of Middle East investors.Dani Olmo could be banned from playing for Barcelona again this seasonCredit: GettyTeam-mate Pau Victor also is at risk as Barcelona’s accounts sparked action from LaLigaCredit: GettyThe 30-year deals were said to have pumped £84million into the club’s finances, allowing them to meet LaLiga balance sheet rules. It has now emerged that the paperwork confirming the deal was completed by a temporary accountant appointed by the club on December 31 after its arrangement with global firm Grant Thornton ran out.But when Barcelona’s new full-time accountancy firm, Crowe Spain, reported the official figures for this season by last month’s deadline, NONE of that sum was included. In a damning statement, LaLiga announced: “On January 3 2025, a certificate issued by the club’s new auditor was provided, recognising that the transaction was correctly recorded as income in the club’s Profit and Loss account for the current season.READ MORE ON FOOTBALL“This documentation was necessary and essential to validate the accounting. “Without these certificates, it would not have been possible for Barcelona to register players with LaLiga.“Subsequently, in its Interim Financial Statements referring to the first half of the current season, no amount of the aforementioned corporate operation is finally recorded in the Profit and Loss account.“That is contrary to what had been certified by the Club and the auditor at the time of the execution of said operation.”Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSThe result was LaLiga informing Barcelona that the £84m leeway had been knocked off its spending limits for this season, with both players officially “unregistered”, while the auditor involved in January has been reported to Spain’s financial watchdog. It puts the immediate playing future of the pair in the hands of the Spanish government, through its Sports Council, which is due to make a ruling in the coming days.Horror moment Barcelona star finds his tooth on the pitch after losing it in battle with Real Betis defender Barca are pinning their hopes on the Sports Council arguing that players have a right to work and that deregistering them now would unfairly prevent them from doing so.But it could see further problems beyond a likely block on new signings this summer unless there are major sales to fill the financial void.Real Madrid currently trail Barca by three points but would be likely to argue that their rivals’ position has been illegally strengthened by being able to field players who LaLiga now agrees should not have been available for selection.Olmo has played in seven LaLiga games – bringing six wins and a draw – plus three matches in the Copa del Rey, one in the Spanish Super Cup and two in the Champions League since his registration was confirmed in January.Victor has appeared in five games in total this year. Ex-Man Utd coach slams club for ‘closing the door’ on Anthony Elanga as he blasts current star he’s ‘never been sold on’

FORMER Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has slammed the club for “closing the door” on Nottingham Forest matchwinner Anthony Elanga. And Meulensteen claims Elanga is much more of a United winger than Alejandro Garnacho, who struggled again in Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat at the City Ground.Former Man Utd coach Rene Meulensteen has slammed his former club for ‘closing the door’ on Nottingham Forest match-winner Anthony ElangaElanga’s stunning solo goal earned Forest a 1-0 win over United on TuesdayGarnacho lacked goal-killing instinct against ForestMeulensteen worked with junior United teams before becoming a first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson. The Dutchman told Poker Firma: “I’ve never been sold on Alejandro Garnacho to be fairly honest.“I think there’s a personality and character issue at times.“Anthony Elanga on the other hand, his performance the other night was exactly what you want to expect from a Manchester United winger – strong, direct, powerful, full of confidence and taking players on.READ MORE ON MAN UTD “I always thought Elanga showed those glimpses when he was playing for Man United, but the club closed the door on him and his career has restarted at a different club.“You really have to question the decision-making process to let players like him go, because there’s been a few who have slipped through the fingers.”Elanga showed United what they were missing with the sensational fifth-minute goal that earned Forest a precious victory. The Sweden international broke from a United corner and ran more than 80 yards, with power and pace, before confidently stroking a calm finish past Andre Onana. Most read in FootballJoin SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plusin-depth coverage and exclusives from Old TraffordIn that magical ten seconds, Elanga highlighted his own qualities and showed up the deficiencies of goal-shy United.Ruben Amorim’s side created a number of openings but did not have enough quality in the final third to make them count as Forest defended the lead with their lives.’That’s why I’m the manager’ – Ruben Amorim hits back at Wayne Rooney as Man Utd boss aims to win Premier LeagueMeulensteen worked with junior United teams before becoming a first-team coach under Sir Alex FergusonMeulensteen worked closely with Cristiano Ronaldo during the superstar’s first stint at UnitedAmorim rightly points out that Elanga, and other forward players who have left the club and thrived elsewhere, were all given chances at Old Trafford.Elanga joined United at the age of 12 and contributed just four goals and four assists in 55 appearances for the first team, 25 of them starts.Amorim said: “We are not talking about players who did not play for Manchester United.“Here the pressure is too big, sometimes. Forgotten man Mason Mount’s timely Man Utd return ahead of summer cull could make him perfect answer for two managers

MASON Mount may have become something of a forgotten man in the minds of many Manchester United fans. But the returning midfielder is firmly at the forefront of the thinking of the two managers he needs to impress.Mason Mount won his first minutes since December on Tuesday nightMount replaced Joshua Zirkzee in the 78th minuteThe 26-year-old midfielder almost made it 1-1 within minutesRuben Amorim has spoken about his ‘love’ for MountMount returned to pitch for the first time in THREE months in the dying embers of United’s 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday night. The 26-year-old replaced Joshua Zirkzee in the 78th minute – and was inches away from finding an equaliser almost instantly. He was involved in United’s flurry of chances in the final ten minutes, including Harry Maguire’s effort that was cleared off the line by Murillo in the last kick of the game. And Mount’s return couldn’t have come at a better time, or under a better manager, who is still juggling and shifting his 4-3-3 system. With United set to make sweeping squad changes in the summer, the once-loved England star has a great chance to stake his claim to a place as one of Amorim’s No 10s.In fact, the former Sporting Lisbon manager adores Mount – he said so himself.Amorim revealed: “I really love Mason because I have seen how much he suffers, but also how he does everything right…how he eats, how he lives.“When a player does that, they will always have the support of everyone at the club – and you must remember, he was a European champion and very talented.”And if Mount can prove his injury woes are finally behind him, you will not see anyone outside his immediate family smile wider than Thomas Tuchel. As Tuchel gathered his first England squad at St George’s Park last month, ahead of the World Cup qualifying wins over Albania and Latvia, the absence of Mount was hardly a shock.Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim hails ‘perfect captain’ Bruno Fernandes after hat-trick heroics against Real Sociedad Indeed, his last appearance in an England shirt came more than two and a half years ago. While everybody recalls Harry Kane blazing his second penalty against France over Hugo Lloris’ bar in the final moments of the World Cup quarter-final defeat in Doha, only a few will remember how it was a VAR review for Theo Hernandez’s barge on Mount that led to the spot-kick being awarded.Mount had made himself an England regular, starting the group games against Iran and USA and with 36 caps and five goals to his name before his 24th birthday. He also started the Euro 2020 final against Italy, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat at Wembley.Since then, his career has stalled, a pubic bone issue curtailing the final half-season in SW6 before his £55m move to United, where he has made just NINE Prem starts in 20 months.Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford in November could have been a springboard and Mount played the final four minutes of the 1-1 draw at Ipswich in the Portuguese manager’s first game. But Mount lasted just 14 minutes of the 2-1 Manchester derby win at City before Christmas, his last taste of action.United have played 98 games since Mount signed but he has missed more than half of them, leading to a feeling from many that, if there has to be a cull of the squad to fund a rebuild this summer, he will be among those considered dispensable.Mount lasted just 14 minutes of the Manchester derby win in DecemberThe midfielder was devastated after only just returning from injury a week priorNot so. Indeed, Amorim was thrilled to have Mount – unused – back on the bench at Leicester before the international break. The United boss said: “The fact is we need players like him. Maybe he can’t play too much, too soon – but even five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”Such words can only help Mount on a personal as well as a footballing level. And it will be a similar situation with the new England boss.Tuchel’s praise of Mount during their Champions League-winning time together at Chelsea signalled a bond of trust. The German said: “Mason has the full package mentally, in terms of talent and physically. And the most important part is his character. “He has both feet on the ground and he’s a nice guy. He came to training every day to learn something new and have a new experience.“Mason is a guy who can recover very fast. He is a very physical player, who has self-confidence but in a positive way.“It was a pleasure to have him, to be at his side and guide and support him.“The most important part was that he was not affected by all the praise. He feels an obligation to make the most of himself and wants it absolutely badly. It’s a top mix.”That relationship was fostered from an unpromising beginning – when the first interaction between the pair was a ruck over team selection.Even five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.Ruben AmorimWhen Tuchel arrived at Chelsea he wanted the reassurance of more experience in his team. That meant players like veteran Cesar Azpilicueta who had not played much under previous manager Frank Lampard, and midfielder Jorginho.Mount was having none of it and pointedly told his manager so. Adding that in previous weeks he had been Man of the Match on a couple of occasions and that Tammy Abraham had recently scored a hat trick. It could have backfired explosively but instead Tuchel embraced the fire in Mount’s belly and admired his passion – a trait he shares.Mount didn’t step back on his principles and became the first name on Tuchel’s Chelsea team-sheet. Mount became a staple under Thomas Tuchel at ChelseaWith some other bosses it might not have gone down well and could have meant curtains for him at a young age at Stamford Bridge.Instead, Tuchel harnessed Mount’s energy and enthusiasm and the pair went on to forge a now concrete-like relationship. The Cobham academy graduate would play in various positions for Tuchel at his manager’s command. As a wide player, as a number ten, holding midfielder.Mason has the full package mentally, in terms of talent and physically. And the most important part is his character. Thomas TuchelHe was named Chelsea Player of the Year for consecutive years between 2021 and 2022.Mount, too, was grateful for Tuchel’s input, recalling: “He was so clear on what he wanted and how he would like us to play, very clear on the roles and responsibilities, that it made it very easy for us to transition.“From day one, as players we realised how he gives his game plan. It made it easy for us to go onto the pitch and do it. “Under him I played a little bit higher than I was used to – as a kind of forward 10, or sometimes a winger or a false 9. “I had to adapt a bit but that gave me more opportunity to get into the box and have the opportunities to score and create.”A goalscorer who is versatile and adaptable, able to change positions at the drop of a hat, and who wants to repay his managers for their faith. For club, and country, a born-again Mount could be the perfect answer. The next few months will show whether he is able to thrust himself back into the limelight.Man Utd player ratings vs Nottingham ForestMANCHESTER UNITED’S woes continue after another disappointing loss to Nottingham Forest.Forest picked up a 1-0 victory at the City Ground thanks to ex-United ace Anthony Elanga’s winner after just five minutes.United remain 13th in the Premier League table and look set for their worst ever Premier League finish. That is at least what their performance at Forest showed, as Ruben Amorim’s men don’t show signs of really understanding the Portuguese tactician’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. But who stood out for a poor United’s side? ‘A brilliant failure’ – Incredible footage of Arne Slot’s craziest coaching idea resurfaces from his playing days

ARNE SLOT has taken the Premier League by storm in his debut season as Liverpool manager. The Dutchman, 46, looks on course to win the title – just the Reds’ second in the Prem era – ahead of Arsenal. Arne Slot’s bizarre kick-off technique has resurfacedCredit: XThe Dutchman flicked the ball up and booted it in the airCredit: XThe idea was to kick it high and into the opposition half to cause chaos for the defendersCredit: XThe ball ended up bouncing on the centre circle in his own halfCredit: XSlot’s experiment was dubbed a ‘brilliant failure’Credit: GettyBut this is not the first time he has caused a stir and sent shockwaves around football with his tactical revolution.Although, his never-seen-before-or-since idea from 2011 did not quite have the same success. In fact, it was branded “een briljante mislukking” – “a brilliant failure”.Because what Slot did was utterly baffling. READ MORE ON FOOTBALLPlaying as a midfielder for PEC Zwolle in the Dutch second tier, he got permission from his coaches to try something new in an attempt to bamboozle the opposition. He certainly did that – and no doubt his own team-mates and fans, too.Playmaker Slot took kick-off with Joey van den Berg, flicked the ball up and then booted it as high as possible into the air in barely believable scenes. The original idea was to try and kick the ball high into the opposition half – even into the penalty area – and for Slot’s Zwolle team-mates to chase it down and cause chaos in the hope of taking advantage of the defence’s confusion and scoring. Most read in FootballCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITSThe idea was done in training – and to good enough effect to give the experiment a go in a match. But when it came to the crunch moment, Slot got the kick all wrong as he sent the football almost directly vertically upwards – actually slightly backwards – rather than towards the goal. Arne Slot makes embarrassing blunder in Liverpool press conference as he ‘forgets Cristiano Ronaldo played for Man Utd’ It bounced in his own half just inside the centre circle between a bunch of very confused footballers amid ironic cheers from the crowd – while the commentator described the unfathomable start to the match as “extraordinarily strange”. Slot’s embarrassing blunder is still remembered fondly in Dutch football, regularly shown on TV and those involved can’t help but laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Slot’s manager at the time, Art Langeler, told the De Stentor newspaper: “By firing the ball as high as possible into the penalty area, the idea was our three strikers would run forward and be there (for when it dropped) on the edge of the area. And who knows what would come of that?”[We tried it in training] three times even. That’s why [assistant] Jaap Stam and I said to each other, ‘Let’s try it’. ‘MADE HIMSELF LOOK RIDICULOUS'”But it needed the right execution, of course.”It looked funny. And if you didn’t know the background, you’d think, ‘What on earth are they doing? They just shoot the ball into the air.’ “No, this was a brilliant failure, let’s leave it at that.”Another Zwolle coach Jan Everse added to The Athletic: “It was still a ridiculous idea. Arne has a lot of ideas — this, unfortunately, was one of his worst ones.”The kick was not what he wanted. He got it totally wrong.”He made himself look ridiculous — it was unbelievable.”Read More on The SunIncredibly, Slot was determined to try the tactic again and did so later the same year – again against Cambuur – and again it went horribly wrong. Safe to say, we won’t expect the likes of Mo Salah or Dominik Szoboszlai to introduce the hoof-it-really-high-in-the-air-and-hope-it-causes-chaos play in the Premier League anytime soon…Liverpool fans won’t be expecting any similar experimentsCredit: Getty More

They were here playing for Manchester United. “In here the pressure is too big sometimes and sometimes you don’t get time and you should have time for these kids to develop.’Leaving Man Utd works wonders’ – Fans love Antony’s wild Real Betis celebrations as he goes topless and waves huge flag”But for that you need a strong base to support all these kids and if you don’t have strong base we are not going to help our kids. “They had their chances and sometimes football is like that and the pressure of playing for Manchester United is really big.”Elanga’s goal against his former club means he now has 28 Premier League goal contributions in his Forest career, better than any Man Utd winger over the last two seasons. The Swede had originally joined United at the age of 12 before going on to make his debut aged 19 in 2021 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He became a more regular player under interim boss Ralf Rangnick in 2022, but ultimately became frustrated by the lack of opportunities then presented to him under Erik ten Hag.On leaving the club, he told The Times in 2024: “It was difficult [to leave] but it was needed because I wanted to play and I didn’t want to spend another season just playing 10 minutes or not playing for 10 games,’ he explained.”I wanted a fresh start but I knew it wouldn’t be easy leaving a club that I had been at for nine years.”Sometimes football is like that, it might not always work somewhere.”I had seen what he (Erik ten Hag) did at Ajax (with young players) so I was looking forward to it but I just didn’t get the opportunities.”Elanga’s winner strengthened his club’s position in terms of qualifying for the Champions League next season.Assuming the Premier League is handed a fifth Champions League spot due to good performances from teams in Europe this season, Forest currently have a 10-point advantage to falling out of the qualifying spots this season with eight games to go.Meanwhile, Man Utd remain on the hunt for back-to-back league wins this season.Read More on The SunThey had more of the ball and had more than 20 shots at goal but struggled to create clear-cut chances other than a goal-line clearance at the end of the game.Forest travel to Aston Villa in their next league game, while United host Manchester City in the Manchester Derby.Man Utd player ratings vs Nottingham ForestMANCHESTER UNITED’S woes continue after another disappointing loss to Nottingham Forest.Forest picked up a 1-0 victory at the City Ground thanks to ex-United ace Anthony Elanga’s winner after just five minutes.United remain 13th in the Premier League table and look set for their worst ever Premier League finish. That is at least what their performance at Forest showed, as Ruben Amorim’s men don’t show signs of really understanding the Portuguese tactician’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. But who stood out for a poor United’s side? And who was the biggest disappointment?Check out Kostas Lianos’ players ratings below and find out…Andre Onana – 5Can’t blame him for Nottingham Forest’s winner as Anthony Elanga’s shot was too good. Made a stunning save to deny Ryan Yates’ header without knowing the Forest ace was offside.Leny Yoro – 5Should have been more aware before Elanga’s goal that came straight after a Man Utd corner-kick in which he had moved forward. One could argue Yoro made up for it when he stopped a fine run by Elanga in the second half with an amazing and well-timed challenge to save United from a second.Matthijs de Ligt – 4The centre-back was also nowhere to be seen before Elanga’s goal. No other major errors but should have done better on the rebound after Diogo Dalot’s header hit the crossbar.Noussair Mazraoui – 4Completely hopeless during Elanga’s run that led to the goal and struggled in his defensive duties, especially in the first half. Not sure if the full-back fits in a defensive trio as part of Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation…Diogo Dalot – 6A strong performance down the right wing with some fine runs and good crosses. Registered United’s best chance in the first half when his header rattled Forest’s crossbar.Casemiro – 4At fault for Elanga’s goal as there was absolutely no midfield presence during Forest’s counter.Loads of inaccurate passes and got booked for a reckless challenge on Yates before complaining in a very unjust way. Registered three shots but didn’t cause concern for Matz Sels.Manuel Ugarte – 4Cut a rather anonymous figure, among the guilty parties for Elanga’s goal as Man Utd’s midfield was caught sleeping. Rightly substituted at half-time.Patrick Dorgu – 5A fine display during the first half as he cut a strong presence down the left flank, even though he was completely outrun by Elanga before the goal. But the versatile full-back was the complete opposite in the second half with a series of errors against a stunning Neco Williams.Bruno Fernandes – 6Registered the game’s first shot on target with a powerful effort that required a lunge from Sels, and that was basically United’s best shot throughout the entire match.Fernandes produced some fine long balls and upgraded Man Utd’s midfield after Ugarte and Casemiro’s exits.Alejandro Garnacho – 2Very disappointing performance from the winger. Completely hopeless before Elanga’s goal with a desperate tackle and was lucky to avoid a booking for a ridiculous challenge on Yates while the Argentina international was on the attack.A game riddled with heavy touches, failed dribbles, wrong passes, blocked shots and a silly yellow card as he kicked the ball away in frustration. Had a good shot on 69 minutes as a saving grace.Joshua Zirkzee – 3Was supposed to be a striker but was often seen playing too deep and didn’t register a chance in front of Forest’s goal. Didn’t inspire any danger even after Rasmus Hojlund came on to help him up front.SUBSRasmus Hojlund – 5Was much better than a woeful Zirkzee up front for Man Utd. But didn’t cause any significant danger and never looked like a goalscoring threat. Harry Maguire looked far more lethal as a false nine after he entered the pitch with a lot more presence inside the box.Christian Eriksen – 4Didn’t really elevate United’s midfield after Ugarte and Casemiro’s exit. The sort of performance that makes one wonder about his Old Trafford future…Harry Maguire – 5Only played nine minutes as a false nine and was by far Man Utd’s best forward. Brought on as a desperation move that almost paid off with the best chance of the match as his last-gasp effort was cleared by Murillo just off the line.Mason Mount – N/A More
