Olympic champ David Rudisha survives horror car crash after being smashed head-on by a bus

TWO-TIME Olympic gold medallist David Rudisha has emerged unscathed from a horror car crash after his SUV collided head-on with a bus in his native Kenya.

The world 800m record holder was travelling on the Nairobi-Kisumu highway on Saturday night when one of his tyres burst, leading him to smash into the onrushing vehicle.

Rudisha was taken to hospital after the accident, where he was treated only for minor soft-tissue injuries.

The 30-year-old issued a statement on Twitter after the incident, where he thanked God for surviving.

He said: “Thanking the Almighty God for the gift of life.

“Saturday night around 1030hrs I survived a tragic road accident at Keroka on my way home to Kilgoris after a head on collision with a bus plying Kisii Nairobi Route.

“I am fine with no injuries! Thank you for your prayers.”

Keroka police chief Walter Abondo said: “Rudisha was rushed to the Keroka Sub County Hospital where the doctors revealed that the athlete had not suffered any fractures, and he has been allowed to go home and rest.”

Rudisha won the gold medal at the Olympics in 2012 and 2016, while he also won at the World Championships in 2011 and 2015.

But he hasn’t competed since the Shanghai Diamond League meeting in May 2017 due to recurrent back and knee injuries.

However he has reportedly started light training as he looks to defend his gold medal at the Olympic 2020 Games in Tokyo.

He has been given a wild card entry at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Doha, but he is not expected to be fit in time to take part in the national trial in Nairobi between September 12-13.
