Boy, 12, charged over ‘racist chants’ allegedly aimed at Alfredo Morelos during Rangers’ 2-1 win over Celtic

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been charged over “racist chants” allegedly aimed at Rangers star Alfredo Morelos during December’s Old Firm clash with Celtic.

Cops confirmed that the young lad had been reported in relation to alleged abuse directed at the Colombian during the Glasgow derby game which Steven Gerrard’s men won 2-1.

Superintendent Mark Sutherland, of Greater Glasgow Division: “Abuse of any form is completely unacceptable.

“Police Scotland will continue to rigorously investigate any reports of abuse we receive.

“We’d remind the public that, as the person charged is below the age of 18, he cannot be named or identified for legal reasons as per the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995.”

Last week Rangers forward Morelos was misquoted by Sky Sports as saying he had been targeted with racist abuse by Hoops fans.

But it later transpired the 23-year-old did not mention Celtic supporters at all.

He instead defended his own throat gesture he made towards the Parkhead support and insisted that it was not racist.

In the correct translation, the Light Blues hitman said he had felt racism “on and off the pitch”.

Morelos said: “I feel there have been a lot of racist gestures towards me.

“Even in Aberdeen where people messed about with my mother and messed about with me.

“People have thrown coins and everything towards me sometimes when I scored goals and celebrated when we played away from home.

“I am the type of person who is up for it and I don’t waste any time paying attention to this because this is my work and it is my passion to score goals.

“And I know that opposition fans don’t like this.”

Celtic FC have been contacted for comment.

Rangers FC have also been approached for a response.
