Only Liverpool can match record-chasing Portsmouth’s 2020 form but Kenny Jackett only has eyes on promotion

PORTSMOUTH climbed into promotion contention in League One on the back of a run even Liverpool cannot surpass.

Since the turn of the year, Pompey’s record of eight wins and one draw is matched only by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.

And on Saturday they face lowly Tranmere in sight of a club-record ninth successive victory.

But boss Kenny Jackett has warned his players their barnstorming results will count for nothing if they do not return to the second-tier of English football for the first time since 2012.

Jackett, 58, said: “Comparing us to Liverpool is a fantastic thing to say, we appreciate it.

“Everyone at the club has worked hard to get half a chance, now we have to take that chance.

“All we’ve done is give ourselves a chance.

“We’ve put ourselves in a position, but we’ve done no more than that. Now we have to try to enjoy the challenge.

“Now it’s what we do going forward that counts. We can pat ourselves on the back if we want to, but that doesn’t work. “

Jackett has turned things around impressively since mid-October, when a 1-0 defeat at Wimbledon left fans calling for the manager’s head.

He said: “It would be fantastic for me as a manager you always want success, and if we could do that this year it wold be great.

“I’ve got to say the club deserve it. It’s a real passionate football city.

“Portsmouth is a big club, there’s a lot of focus. It’s a great club as well, you look at the amount of fans at games, the people who travel away.

“Just the enthusiasm in the city for this football club is massive.”

Liverpool can afford to lose SIX games and still win title… but the idea makes Jurgen Klopp want to vomit
