Kell Brook finally gives up on Amir Khan fight as Brit welterweight eyes bigger fish

KELL BROOK wants to let arch-nemesis Amir Khan off the hook and go on to fry bigger fish.

The Sheffield fighter and keen angler has had the welterweight star on his line for almost a decade now but the Bolton man has never taken the bait.

Both boxers are 33 and in the twilight of their careers — and the public demand for the match-up is sinking fast.

Brook, the target of verbal barbs from the 2004 Olympic silver medallist, is sick of the sideshow and wants to net himself a second world title before it is too late.

Ahead of his hometown clash with American Mark DeLuca on Saturday, after a year out chasing monster fights, Brook said: “I don’t really want to talk about Amir Khan any more, I am sick of it.

“All I ever hear him say is, ‘Me and Eddie Hearn have a big meeting next week’. It’s all rubbish.

“He wants to tell me to fight him… Dubai, Saudi Arabia. Rubbish, he is not serious.

“I am only interested in fighters who want to fight me.

“If he wants to be serious and fight, let’s do it. Otherwise there is nothing more to say.”

Brook, the former IBF welterweight king, walked out on childhood trainer Dominic Ingle in October 2018.

But after just one underwhelming win, he returned to the man he calls a second father.

Special K said: “Going back wasn’t hard or awkward. He is like a dad to me and the gym is my second home.

“Everything about the relationship is more than a trainer and a fighter and a gym.”

Ingle thought he had seen the last of his protege when he quit the Wincobank gym ahead of his points win over Michael Zerafa 14 months ago.

But the experienced trainer, who inherited the gym from his legendary dad Brendan, welcomed him back with open arms — although he stopped short of a celebratory fishing trip.

He said: “Kell is a grown man and a father and has to find his own way and he stands by all of his decisions.

“I did not think Kell would ever come back to the gym because I thought he would beat Zerafa quite easily and get the Khan fight.

“We had made plenty of money over the years and he could go off and enjoy his life.

“Kell has his own passions in life and I have mine. He loves fishing, I hate it!”
