Wolves set to snap up 17-year-old Rochdale full-back Luke Matheson for £1m after Man Utd goal heroics

WOLVES are on the brink of signing Rochdale’s 17-year-old full-back Luke Matheson for £1million.

The teenage right-back is having a medical at Molineux after being targeted as a long-term challenger to Matt Doherty.

However he will be loaned back to Rochdale for the rest of the season as part of the deal.

Matheson broke on to the scene with his fine finish at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup in September.

Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo has thanked departing defender Ryan Bennett for his fantastic contribution to the club’s rise from Championship mediocrity to the Europa League’s latter stages.

The 29-year-old is having a medical ahead of a shock move to fellow Champions League chasers Leicester City.

The Wolves head coach said: “I appreciate and thank Ryan Bennett for what he’s done.

“I think it’s amazing that he goes on loan to a situation that he wants with Leicester City. I wish him all the best.”

Nuno revealed he was relaxed about adding to his first-team squad before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

He added: “It’s a very tough window to work. It’s about re-balancing the squad. But we are working.

“We have signed Daniel Podence and we hope he brings solutions.

“We have a lot of competitions in front of us and we want different characteristics in each player that can give us solutions. He can help us.”

Wolves’ Portuguese chief also believes Manchester United’s major January signing Bruno Fernandes can help tomorrow’s opponents – although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer does not believe his £55m star will start the evening kick-off.

Santo added: “He’s a good player, a fantastic player. But we know the squad of Manchester United is amazing so we are prepared to face fantastic opponents tomorrow.”
