Four Cardiff fans arrested over ‘alleged racially aggravated abuse’ during FA Cup clash at Reading

THAMES VALLEY POLICE have confirmed four Cardiff fans were arrested over “alleged racially aggravated abuse” during Saturday’s game with Reading.

Four males from south Wales, aged between 15 and 24, have been released under investigation with local authorities saying they “continue to work in partnership with the clubs and South Wales Police”.

Midway through the first-half, an announcement was made over the public address system at the Madejski Stadium saying “racist or homophobic chanting from the away fans must cease immediately”.

The announcer made the statement while the Royals were attacking the Cardiff goal – and clearly identified the away fans.

While it was not clear over what the incidents were, Reading released a statement labelling them as “wholly unacceptable”.

The statement said: “Two isolated but wholly unacceptable incidents of discriminatory abuse were reported by a matchday steward in the South Stand during the first half of our FA Cup Fourth Round match against Cardiff City this afternoon. These incidents will be fully investigated by the club.

“At Reading FC we are committed to ensuring that the matchday environment here provides a positive experience for all.

“Discrimination of any form is not ok and all supporters who visit Madejski Stadium are reminded that instances of discriminatory behaviour will not be tolerated.”

It was the second successive weekend that Reading have been involved in a similar incident after claims during their match at Millwall.

Meanwhile, Cardiff say they will speak with Reading and the police before making any further comments.

A statement said: “Cardiff City Football Club is aware of the allegations made against visiting supporters at today’s FA Cup tie at Reading.

“We will be speaking with Reading Football Club, Thames Valley Police and South Wales Police (in attendance with our travelling support) to ascertain the facts of the matter.

“We will conduct these conversations with the relevant authorities before making any further comment.”
