RB LEIPZIG forward Ademola Lookman reportedly wants to swap his allegiances from England to Nigeria.
The 22-year-old has featured for England’s U19, U20 and U21s side, but it has been claimed that he now has his heart set on representing the Super Eagles.
England youth star Ademola Lookman could be soon representing Nigeria
Lookman – who was a key part of the Young Lions team that won the U-20 World Cup in 2017 – is eligible to play for Nigeria through his parents.
According to AOIFootball.com, Lookman has expressed his desire to don the green and white jersey ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations next year.
Nigeria’s Technical Assistant Tunde Adelakun has stated that he is hopeful the switch will be granted, as he confirmed they are only waiting for approval by Fifa.
He said: “Lookman has applied for the switch and all the documents are in order.
“It’s a positive step forward when made his commitment to Nigeria and we are just waiting for a FIFA clearance.
“Once the go-ahead is sorted, it will be up to coach Gernot Rohr to decide if his club performance would earn him a call up.
“He’s one of three former England youth players we’ve filed for but they are all aware of the caveat.”
Before adding: “All the players were told that they can only earn a place in the squad by playing regular club football.”
Lookman has failed to hit the heights since re-joining Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig from Everton last summer.
The Charlton academy graduate has featured in just four league games this season.
Newcastle reportedly enquired about the availability of the player earlier in the transfer window, but it remains to be seen whether he will be on his way back to the Premier League.
