Snow Volleyball Commission outlines plans for the future

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 22, 2020 – The FIVB Snow Volleyball Commission discussed its strategy for the future when it met for the first time at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne this week.

The newly-formed Commission, chaired by FIVB President, Dr. Ary. S. Graça F°, reflected on the success of snow volleyball so far and looked to the future of this exciting discipline, which gives fans from all over the world an opportunity to play volleyball all year round, anytime, anywhere.

Following the success of the first-ever Snow Volleyball World Tour last year, as well as the FIVB’s Snow Volleyball Festival staged last weekend in the Swiss Alps, the Snow Volleyball Commission discussed a number of topics, including the calendar for the 2020 season, the launch of the FIVB Snow Volleyball World Championships and the overall management and promotion of events.

Renowned athletes and Olympic legends that participated at Snow Volleyball Festival, Gilberto ‘Giba’ Amauri Godoy Filho, Vladimir Grbic and Julius Brink, joined the meeting to share their first-hand experiences of the sport. Each of the athletes explained their excitement and joy in playing snow volleyball and confirmed their interest in promoting future events to help grow the sport.

Speaking after the meeting, the FIVB President said:

“The creation of the Snow Volleyball Commission reaffirms our commitment to developing this exciting new sport. With snow volleyball, we are now a 365 days-a-year sport. We believe there is a huge potential, and we have already seen it in 2019 during the first-ever Snow Volleyball World Tour. All five continents were represented on the Tour and there was plenty of history made, with Argentina claiming its first ever medal in winter sports, Brazil winning its first gold and Cameroon cementing a top five position.

“These results are truly remarkable and this is just the beginning. We started this journey with the idea of giving more opportunities to the countries of Northern Hemisphere, but now we can clearly see the appetite for traditionally summer nations to host and participate in winter sports. This opens even more markets and possibilities for us to develop snow volleyball.”

The FIVB Snow Volleyball World Tour calendar will be announced later this year, while the first-ever FIVB Snow Volleyball World Championships is due to take place in 2021.
