Tyson Fury having second thoughts over MMA switch as he claims he’d only do a ‘stand-up’ fight without wrestling

TYSON FURY has backtracked on his wish to make a sensational switch to MMA.

The Gypsy King previously revealed he fancies a scrap in the cage, and even said he would be trained by UFC legend Conor McGregor.

This was laughed off by The Notorious in the week before he makes his cage return against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in Las Vegas.

And now Fury, who fights Deontay Wilder on February 22 in a rematch, has moved to play down the prospect of becoming an MMA fighter.

Speaking over dinner with talkSPORT regular and boxing journalist Gareth A Davies, Fury said: “I would fight an MMA fighter, but not in a wrestling match, in a stand-up fight.

“We could go into a cage and put cage gloves on. If they wanted to kickbox, but I don’t recommend that with a giant with long legs.

“Whatever they wanna do. As long as it’s not grabbing to the floor and all that. I don’t like all that stuff.

“It’s not really my thing.

“I’m alright with my legs, but it’s not my thing. Punching is my thing. Obviously, you can’t have it your own way all of the time.

“But any one of them guys [Miocic, Jones or Ngannou]. When I’m finished with the boxing I’ll have a dust-up with them.”

WINNING WWE DEBUT

Fury has already swapped boxing for another sport – in October he made his WWE debut at the Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia.

And it was a successful one too as he defeated Braun Strowman via count out.

In November last year Fury claimed to have been in contact with McGregor about swapping the boxing ring for the octagon.

But the Irishman was left baffled by his claims.

McGregor said: “Tyson keeps saying we have spoken and that I have said that I would train him but I have never spoken to Tyson in my life.

“I don’t know why he is saying that but it is not a bad little story so I let it roll. I heard he is coming to my fight at the weekend and he is a good man and a phenomenal boxer.”
