But the title-winning season marked a promise kept by Mohamed to his son Farid, who died in a car crash during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Farid grew up a supporter of Monterrey, and his father promised his son one day he would lead the Striped-Ones to a Liga MX title.

Mohamed had coached Monterrey from 2015-2018 but left to pursue a career in La Liga as he took charge of Celta Vigo.

But after an unsuccessful stint in Spain, and then in Argentina with Huracan, the Argentine manager returned to Mexico to fulfil the promise he made to his son.

The 49-year-old had to endure a nailbiting shootout which Monterrey won 4-2, converting all but one of their spot-kicks.

Former Tottenham flop Vincent Janssen came on as a substitute in the final, and put his manager at ease by scoring the first penalty of the shootout.

Janssen said: “I think it’s always important to score the first one and I’ve never missed one in my career.

“I told the coach I wanted to take the first one to start off good.”
