Tyson Fury reveals he split with trainer Ben Davison ahead of Deontay Wilder rematch as he was ‘going stale’

TYSON FURY has revealed that he split with trainer Ben Davison before his rematch with Deontay Wilder because he had gone stale.

The Gyspy King stunned the sport when he ditched the man who had been in his corner for his last five fights earlier this month.

The 31-year-old then announced that he had teamed up with experienced Javon ‘Sugar’ Hill to prepare for his WBO title fight with Wilder on February 22.

Fury explained to College Game Day: “I was going a little bit stale, repetitive, doing the same things day in, day out for years. I needed a change.”

Former trainer Davison was credited with saving his life when he was  a suicidal 28st addict and played a major role in his comeback to the ring.

After the split, MMA superstar Conor McGregor took to Twitter to urge the pair to rekindle their relationship.

New man Hill is the nephew of legendary Kronk gym icon Emanuel Steward and Fury added: “We’re gonna go back to basics.

“I trained with Sugar Hill back in 2010, we got on like a house on fire.”

Tyson Fury on changing trainers

Wilder enhanced his reputation as a knockout artist when he flattened Kuis Ortiz last month, despite falling behind on the cards,

But Fury remains confident that his superior technical skills will prove the difference when he faces off against the Bronze Bomber.

He said: “Footwork is the most important thing for me.

“A wise old trainer once told me your feet will get you in trouble and get you back out of trouble again.

“Not a lot of people today practice the sweet science of footwork in boxing. They look for strength, lift a lot of weights and look for one-punch knockouts.

“It’s great for the highlight reels but what pays the bills is the skill, and if you fail to learn the skill at the top level you will be found wanting.

“That’s what happened with Wilder last time and just like it will do next time on February 22.”

In an exclusive interview with SunSport, boxing legend Lennox Lewis revealed that Fury’s shock switch in trainer will make him an even better fighter.

He said: “Ben did a great job and I have nothing bad to say about him, he took Tyson from a real low point to exactly where he needed to get to.

“But you always need a great trainer and Sugar Hill, as I call him, is a good trainer, I give him very high marks.
