Man Utd blow as James Maddison close to signing bumper new Leicester contract amid transfer interest

LEICESTER CITY are reportedly hoping to agree a new contract for star midfielder James Maddison following speculation around his future.

Maddison, 23, has been in fine form this season, scoring five goals and assisting three and a new deal deal will be a huge blow for those clubs chasing him including Manchester United.

Since his move from Norwich in 2018, Maddison has been a key figure in Leicester’s progress which has seen them move into contention for the Premier League title.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are currently second, eight points behind leaders Liverpool and are on a nine-match winning streak in all competitions.

Maddison still has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current £50,000-a-week contract but The Mirror report that Leicester chiefs are keen to ensure his long-term future is at the King Power stadium.

Rodgers will be hoping not lose another of his stars, after Harry Maguire joined Manchester United in the summer.

Speaking last month, he said: “Every club will lose players at some point but we’ve absolutely no plans to lose anyone in January.

“We want to grow and there’s a lot of development left in this squad.

“Of course good players are going to be linked to other clubs.”

The former Celtic boss went on to add: “Our job is to keep what we have, which is important and, if there’s an opportunity to improve the squad in January we will look to do that.

“If not we will carry on with the squad we have, which is very strong.

“But we’ll certainly not be looking to lose anyone.”

Leicester have been surrounded with speculation about their players, following their fantastic start to the season and Maddison isn’t the only one they will be hoping to tie down to a new deal.

Defender Caglar Soyuncu has been in fine form since filling the void left by Maguire and according to reports, Rodgers is hoping the Turkish international will commit his future to the club in a bid to fend off interest from other Premier League clubs.

Meanwhile Ben Chilwell has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea and with the West London club ready to spend big following their transfer ban, the Foxes could soon find themselves fending off offers from the Blues.
