Sterling’s amazing form helped to propel Manchester City to retain their Premier League title.
But he has admirers the world over off the pitch after publicly tackling the fight against discrimination and racial stereotypes in a series of inspirational addresses.
The City forward’s voice opened the debate about social prejudices and bigotry after he was insulted during City’s Premier League clash at Chelsea last season.
Sterling, who played in City’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday, faces competition for SPOTY from England cricketer Ben Stokes.
SPOTY organisers have yet to announce the shortlist, but Stokes, 28, will be among the favourites after his remarkable summer helping England to win the one-day World Cup and draw The Ashes.
Sterling took to Twitter after City’s victory over Chelsea on Saturday to joke he is cursed after VAR denied him ANOTHER goal.
The England international thought he had wrapped up the points with a third at the Etihad.
But he has adjudged to have strayed marginally offside after the goal was checked.
Sterling tweeted a picture of his offside with the caption: “Happy to improve my VAR overruled goals record today again damn this thing gonna kill me bro #cursed.”
