But coming up against them only highlighted the problems this Manchester United team has.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s youngsters almost bailed him out with a comeback that put them within minutes of victory.
But Oli McBurnie’s late leveller showed Solskjaer’s team need to mature, they need experience of how to see out games.
And the first hour showed how Maguire needs help at the back, as the £85million and his team-mates struggled to contain his old team.
They were overrun by Chris Wilder’s team and were lucky it was only John Fleck and Lys Mousset who found the back of the net.
Solskjaer had matched up Sheffield United’s three centre-backs, which was a sign they feared what was coming.
And Maguire had Phil Jones beside him, making his first Premier League appearance of the season and looking off the pace.
As good as the hosts were, it was clear Maguire needs more support as United try to build their defence around the ex-Blade.
Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford led the fightback and put United back in front – but that would have papered over the problems they have.
McBurnie stayed cool when his chance came in the dying moments, with United’s defence creaking again when the pressure was on.
