Wycombe keeper Ryan Allsop ‘suffers homophobic abuse from Tranmere fans’ as he lodges official complaint with referee

WYCOMBE goalkeeper Ryan Allsop has made an official complaint after allegedly receiving homophobic abuse from Tranmere fans.

Allsop reported the alleged abuse to the referee at half-time during today’s League One clash with Tranmere at Prenton Park.

The 27-year-old is understood to have heard comments coming from the home section of the crowd in the first half, and decided to take action himself.

Wycombe were then late in coming out for the start of the second period as the complaint was being made.

Having informed the officials it is now likely to form part of the referee’s match report which will spark an FA investigation into what went on.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: “If that’s the case then for me there are some stupid idiots about.

“Whether it’s racist or homophobic, whatever it is, we have to stamp this out.

“I have got to credit Ryan Allsop for being brave enough to stand up and say I’m reporting this, and that’s what we are and I’ll stand by him.”

Wycombe went on to win the match 2-0 which saw them move three points clear at the top of the table.

While reports of racist abuse in football in England have been well documented over the past 18 months, cases of homophobic abuse appear to be less frequent.

But the FA’s strict new rules brought in this season cover discriminatory behaviour in all forms, be they centred on race or sexuality.
