Romania vs Holland preview
It’s group winners versus one of the four best third-placed sides from the knockout stages as Romania clash with Holland at the Munich Football Arena on Tuesday.
But there’s a little more to that story.
Romania, ranked 47th by FIFA, actually topped Group E with four points from three matches. Holland, ranked 40 places above Romania, finished third in their group with four points, trailing behind France and Austria.
This marks Romania’s first knockout stage appearance in a major tournament since Euro 2000, but they have historically struggled, having only progressed from one knockout tie in major competitions.
Holland’s recent knockout stage history isn’t promising either, as they’ve lost their last three knockout-stage matches at the Euros to Portugal, Russia, and the Czech Republic.
EURO 2024 FREE BETS AND OFFERS
Ronald Koeman’s side have looked good in patches and very beatable in others, and it’s interesting to see that they’ve only led for a total of 12 minutes and 27 seconds across their three matches.
They do, however, boast a strong record in this contest having won ten of their 14 meetings against Romania, losing just one with the most recent victory a 3-0 win in a friendly back in 2017.
Romania, managed by Edward Iordanescu, present a more formidable challenge this time. They went unbeaten in qualifying, topping a group that included Switzerland, and conceded just five goals in ten fixtures.
And despite facing more shots than any other side in the knockout rounds except Georgia, the expected goals (xG) on those efforts is 0.07, a figure bettered only by England and Belgium.

Goals
There’s a fairly good chance that this won’t be a vintage display from either side, especially in terms of goalmouth action.
The Netherlands rank a dismal 18th of all 24 nations for shots on target during this tournament, with only Slovenia (7) and Georgia (8) in the last-16 having had fewer. Meanwhile only six nations have had fewer total attempts than Romania.
It’s also important to highlight the statistic written above, that despite facing more shots than any other side in the knockout rounds except Georgia, the xG on those efforts is 0.07, a figure bettered only by England and Belgium.
A single goal could well clinch it.

Caution
Cody Gakpo has been the main threat for Holland, scoring two of their four goals in the group stage. He’s also suffered a total of six fouls in his 261 minutes played to this point.
He’ll be a problem for whoever starts at right-back for Romania, who are without Nicusor Bancu due to suspension.
Regular full-back Andrei Ratiu could be shifted to the left with Vasile Mogos getting his first taste of tournament action – which isn’t an easy assignment against a fluid Dutch attack.
Winger Deian Sorescu might be preferred, although he would be out of position and has only ever played at right-back in a handful of games for his country. Wait for team news on this one.

Shots fired
Romania aren’t overly fussed about possession. They beat Ukraine with just 34% of the ball in their opening contest, so Holland should boss those stats.
Edward Iordanescu’s side have faced a whopping 46 shots in their opening three games, but the majority of those have been speculative efforts from distance.
And someone who isn’t afraid to have an effort or two is Tijjani Reijnders, who’s had a total of seven efforts in this competition – only two less than striker Memphis Depay. He also fired off 44 efforts in Serie A last season.
