Vincent Kompany was wanted by THREE Premier League clubs before taking Bayern Munich job, claims his dad

VINCENT KOMPANY was targeted by three Premier League clubs before making his move to join Bayern Munich, according to his dad.

Kompany swapped the Championship for the Champions League last week when he was announced as the new Bayern boss despite relegating Burnley from the Premier League last season.

Kompany had done extremely well in his first season in charge of the Clarets as he led them to the quickest ever promotion from the Championship to England’s top flight.

However things didn’t go to plan in his debut season as a Premier League manager as his Burnley side won just five games and were relegated after finishing in 19th place.

That didn’t stop Bayern Munich from coming knocking when they were searching for a new figure in the dugout in Bavaria – focusing on the former Man City star’s style of play rather than his recent results.

And it seems that other top teams had been sniffing around the Belgian too with his father, Pierre Kompany, revealed that three Premier League clubs were interested in appointing his son.

Speaking to Belgian outlet La Derniere Heure, Pierre explained that he was not as surprised as most football fans when Kompany was hired by Bayern.

He said: “It was a surprise to the whole world. Well, not for me.

“If you look at which teams have already come knocking: last year you had Tottenham and Chelsea, now Brighton showed interest, and Chelsea again.

“But when Bayern, a club that is so well structured at all levels, comes knocking, you don’t refuse.”

As for Brighton, Pierre Kompany has claimed that the Seagulls were eying his son this summer after announcing the departure of Roberto De Zerbi.

The south coast club are yet to appoint a new boss and have been linked with a return for former manager Graham Potter in recent weeks.

Pierre explained that Bayern Munich is the type of club that any coach would jump at the opportunity to manage.

And went on to add that the board in Bavaria were able to look past Burnley’s relegation to appoint Kompany.

He said: “At Bayern they did not focus blindly on that relegation.

“They know Burnley should have gotten more points. They thought it was good that Vincent does not deny his vision when he falls behind.”

Bayern had been linked with a number of other mangers themselves before landing on the four-time Premier League champion.

Rumours had suggested that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso was their number one target before the club moved on to names such as Ralf Rangnick, Oliver Glasner and Julian Nagelsmann.
