Bolton fan tragically dies after match against Cheltenham Town was abandoned due to medical emergency in crowd


A FOOTBALL fan died after being taken ill during Bolton’s clash against Cheltenham Town.

Iain Purslow fell ill during the first half of the League One game.

The 71-year-old received CPR treatment from medical staff and paramedics at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Iain was then rushed to the hospital for further treatment.

As a result of the emergency, the match was abandoned after a 33-minute stoppage.

Bolton have now confirmed the lifelong fan has passed away.

The Trotters have added the FA Cup clash against Luton Town will feature a moment of remembrance for Iain.

A club statement read: “Bolton Wanderers are deeply saddened to confirm that the supporter taken ill at yesterday afternoon’s home fixture against Cheltenham Town has passed away.

“Club chaplain Phil Mason remained with family members later in the day and the Club will continue to offer the family all the support and care they can – as well as looking to offer support to anyone else impacted by this distressing incident.

“The thoughts of everyone connected to Bolton Wanderers are with Iain’s family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.

“Iain will be remembered at Wanderers’ FA Cup third-round replay at home to Luton Town on Tuesday night.

“Rest in peace, Iain.”

Iain was attending the game with his son, Stuart.

Fans have paid their respects to Iain on social media.

One posted: “RIP Iain. A sad loss for the Wanderers family.”

A second commented: “Rest in peace, my condolences to the family and all that knew him.”

A third wrote: “Rest in peace, Iain. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

A fourth said: “Very sad – our thoughts are with all his friends and family.”

Another added: “Truly awful news, nobody should go to a football match and never come home.”
