Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 25 per cent takeover of the club was announced two days earlier on Christmas Eve and his right-hand man Sir Dave Brailsford was at Old Trafford last night.

It was all smiles when the cycling mastermind took to his seat before kick-off.

But he soon realised the huge task facing the Ineos group as Villa raced into the lead.

Brailsford’s face turned to stone as John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker scored.

Ratcliffe and Brailsford can only watch on until the takeover gets signed-off by Premier League chiefs.
