He enjoyed incredible success in the Spanish capital, but nearly cut short his stay to move to Old Trafford.

Ramos, 37, has never played in the Premier League during his illustrious career.

But he claims to be a big fan of the competition, even adding that his dad supports United.

Asked about his potential move to Old Trafford nine years ago, Ramos said: “Yes, I was close to playing for United.

“My father is a great fan of that team, but I stayed where I should, Real Madrid.

“Despite everything, I maintain my admiration for the club, for the Premier League and for its players, because the pace of play is different, and it is a league from which we can all learn a lot.

“I was happy to stay in Madrid, and now I am happy to be in Seville.”

After turning United down in 2014, Ramos won a further two LaLiga titles and three Champions Leagues at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ramos penned a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Real in 2021, before returning to boyhood club Sevilla earlier this year – 18 years after leaving for Madrid.

On his delight at being home, having snubbed a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, he added: “Sevilla gave me everything. They trained me as a footballer, to be able to play for the first time in the First Division, and since then there is something that I feel from within.

“I have felt these colours. When I was asked to return home, this was my first option because I wanted to return to close a cycle. I wanted to see that all the love I feel for people is reciprocated.

“It has been an unforgettable moment for me and this is something I would recommend to anyone who started his career in his hometown.

“I am enjoying it every day, every training session and every game.”
