FOOTBALL fans were left baffled by a bizarre one-world argument between Eric Dier and Matt Doherty.

The pair used to play together for Tottenham, with Doherty leaving the London side almost a year ago for Atletico Madrid.

He is now back in the Premier League with former side Wolves.

And Doherty was involved in a dramatic 1-1 clash against rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Irishman came off the bench to help Gary O’Neil’s side secure a vital point.

But the result could have been very different had Doherty not escaped punishment for an apparent push on Ollie Watkins.

The incident occurred inside Wolves’ box as Watkins burst through on goal.

Doherty appeared to nudge him, sending the England man to the floor in search of a penalty.

But the decision went against Watkins, leaving Doherty a relieved man.

The incident was then discussed on Monday’s Ref Watch segment on Sky Sports.

Former official Dermot Gallagher explained the referee and VAR did not feel there was enough contact.

And Doherty took to Twitter in praise of the decision not to award the penalty, saying: “Never.”

However, this sparked a bizarre one-word argument with Spurs star Dier, who is close friends with Doherty.

He cheekily responded: “Penalty.”

But Doherty refused to back down, saying: “Experience.”

Dier then ended the conversation by adding: “Laziness.”

Fans found the whole experience strange, with one declaring: “Eric and Matt back and forth with one word beefing.”

Another said: “What is going on.”
