Petit seemed unimpressed with Arteta’s side’s start to the season and told Betway he “got bored” of watching them during their clash against Everton on the weekend.

The French midfielder, who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1997-98 and made 118 appearances in all, scoring 11 goals.

“They don’t seem to be playing that way any more. If they want to improve, they need that back.”

Arsenal have returned to the Champions League for the first time in six years.

Arteta has got a youthful squad and Petit seems concerned his players may not have enough experience at the elite level.

“Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Gabriel Jesus, and so on, but I’m looking at other players too.

“Martinelli and Trossard have never played in the Champions League before.

“It’ll be very interesting to see how Arsenal cope with the demands of both the Premier League and the Champions League games.”

Arsenal will open their Champions League campaign tonight against PSV Eindhoven.

The Arsenal icon said a win against PSV is a must as the Gunners need to redeem themselves.

The Gunners are undefeated this term and have won four of their five Premier League games but they lie fourth on the table – two spots lower than where they finished last season.

He added: “Things are not perfect for Arsenal right now, and they definitely need to win against PSV. The first few games are so important.”
