TOTTENHAM have named Son Heung-min the new club captain.

The previous captain, Hugo Lloris, has been stripped of the responsibility after being frozen out at the club.

This has led to the South Korean forward being handed the armband by manager Ange Postecoglou.

Son, 31, will be assisted by defender Cristian Romero and summer signing James Maddison as his assistants.

They will take over the role of Harry Kane following his exit to Bayern Munich.

The England international was Tottenham’s vice-captain last season under Lloris.

It is also suggested that the three are seen as “characters to bring improved spirit and progress in new era”.

Postecoglou has previously praised Son during the club’s pre-season tour and revealed that he had identified his “leadership qualities”.

He said: “I’m looking forward to working with him.

“He’s another one that I think shows real leadership qualities.

“I look at him and he’s pretty much a conduit for the whole squad. He mixes in all groups. I don’t think it’s just because he’s popular. What he’s done in the game he has a certain standing in the game.

“It’s good to see that influence on the group. He’s got a massive influence on the group which doesn’t surprise me because I know he’s a leader for his nation and he’s been an icon for his nation for a long time.

“He carries that really well for someone who has been in the spotlight for that long. He has enormous respect among the players.”

Former captain Lloris is still at the club and has one year remaining on his deal.

However he has been clear that he is keen for a fresh start and has recently been linked with a move to Serie A outfit Lazio.
