Ronaldo did applaud his fans but then stormed off the pitch, threw his arms in the air and kicked a cluster of plastic water bottles as a team-mate tried unsuccessfully to calm him down.

The defeat was his first in the Saudi Pro League and also saw Al-Nassr slip to second, one point behind Al-Ittihad.

The Portuguese, who joined on a whopping £173million-a-year contract, scored eight goals in four matches in February to be crowned player of the month.

But he failed to break the deadlock tonight.

Brazilian striker Romarinho swept in the only goal of the game from inside the box in the 80th minute to seal the win.

That came just ten minutes after he had a volley cleared off the line.

Ronaldo was caught on camera with his hands on his hips and looking very frustrated with his team-mates in the aftermath of the goal.

The ex-Real Madrid man managed to have his only shot on target in injury time but failed to really test the Al-Ittihad goalkeeper.

And he went down the tunnel in a huff, continuing to gesticulate furiously.

Al-Ittihad inflicted Ronaldo’s first defeat in the Middle East since his shock transfer in January – dumping Al-Nassr out of the Saudi Super Cup.

And the home side’s fans took great delight in taunting the five-time Ballon d’Or winner ahead of kick-off in tonight’s league clash.

They again chanted Lionel Messi’s name and even called on their club to buy Ronaldo’s great rival – prompting a wry smile from the Al-Nassr captain.
