FA set to reject major transfer proposal from Premier League teams after chat with Gareth Southgate

THE FA are set to reject a proposal from Premier League teams that would make signing overseas players easier, reports claim.

It comes after “taking soundings” from England manager Gareth Southgate, according to the Daily Mail.

The FA reportedly believe making it easier to sign overseas players could damage the national team.

Premier League clubs are claimed to want the FA to change the number of points overseas players need in order to be granted a visa.

But the FA, who set the points threshold, believe limiting the number of overseas arrivals will help English talent develop better.

After Brexit, a regulation was introduced that meant players needed 15 Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) points to secure a visa.

Prem clubs reportedly want that number reduced to 12, making it easier to sign overseas stars.

Points are scored based on international experience and quality of the league they play in.

Chelsea January signing Andrey Santos was recently denied a work visa following his reported £16million arrival from Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.

The 18-year-old is said to have missed out on securing a permit by just one point.

The Blues also reportedly applied for an exceptional talent visa in order for Santos to play, but were rebuffed.

Santos was then loaned back to Vasco da Gama on Thursday due to his work permit issues.

He is due to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of June.

The young striker was yesterday called up to Brazil’s senior squad for the first time.
