Why Arsenal’s last-minute winner at Aston Villa could have been disallowed leaving rival fans fuming

ARSENAL pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Aston Villa and retain top spot of the Premier League.

But the deciding strike, which went down as an Emi Martinez own goal following a Jorginho shot, could have been chalked off.

Jorginho brilliantly hit the ball from outside the box, slicing it onto the crossbar but the rebound hit Martinez’s head and went in.

But replays revealed two Arsenal players were standing in an offside position, in front of the Villa keeper.

The goal was checked by VAR and Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah were adjudged to have NOT impeded Martinez’s view.

It caused outrage by rival fans online, who believed the league leaders got away with one.

One said: “Var making up for last week with the 2 arsenal players offside in front of the keeper.”

Another added: “Sympathy from VAR this week, how was that not offside?”

One argued: “Got to be offside . Don’t get why Martinez didn’t say anything…”

Another claimed: “Clearly offside.”

Arsenal twice came from behind as goals from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho were sandwiched between a Bukayo Saka leveller.

But after Martinez’s inadvertently headed into his own net, he came up for a late corner with Villa in desperate need of a goal.

Following a breakaway, Gabriel Martinelli broke away and tapped into an empty net.

It put Arsenal back to three points ahead of champions Manchester City.
