And his exit was greeted with loud boos by the travelling Blues fans, some of whom have become impatient with the Spanaird’s underwhelming form.

But some other Chelsea fans thought the treatment of Cucurella was harsh.

They hit back on social media arguing fans should never boo one of their own players.

One supporter said: “He’s been poor. Some of it down to instructions IMO.

“Either way, booing off your own like this is pathetic.”

Another added: “Just embarrassing booing your own players.”

And a third said: “Really pathetic. It’s okay to criticize players or managers, but that kind of crap is purely disrespectful.

“This is where I also wanna see Potter defend his players with passion. This kind of action isn’t necessary or helpful. Has the opposite effect.”

Another commented: “Let’s get a banner going to show Cucurella our support.”

Graham Potter also condemned the boo-boys and called for more understanding.

He said after the match: “They are human beings and have private lives, Marc isn’t the only one.

“You understand the supporters [on their criticism of Cucurella], they pay the money.

“But you have to deal with stuff. He’s fine, he’s going about his work, he knows he’s not in the best moment of form.”
