Celeste was born in Brazilian town Tres Coracoes in 1922, but moved to Bauru, a city of nearly 400,000 when Pele was a kid.
She has received national plaudits for her relationship with her son, being named Brazilian Mother of the Year by O Globo.
Celeste paid Pele a visit in the build-up to the 1966 World Cup, seeing him at a training camp in Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro, before his side flew to England for the tournament.
She has spent her latter years living in the Santos region of Sao Paulo, where her son thrived as a player between 1956 and 1974.
Celeste has two other children, Pele’s siblings Zoca, and Maria Lucia Nascimento.
She also has seven grand-children from Pele – including a girl named Celeste after her, born in 1996.
