The England international was highly influential during Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford as he scored the first and set Anthony Martial up soon after.

But Owen insists the forward can’t be the Red Devils’ “main goalscorer” because he can’t play through the middle like Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie did.

“If you’re at Manchester United, Rashford isn’t going to be scoring you 30 goals a season like a Wayne Rooney, like a Robin van Persie.

“[But] He will contribute double figures every year from that left hand side position.

“If you think Manchester United will play him down the middle and score 30 goals and be your main man then I would question it.”

United have found themselves in need of a new striker after Cristiano Ronaldo’s dramatic exit with Martial their only recognised No9.

Ten Hag admitted the Red Devils will dive into the January transfer window but may have to opt for another loan deal after a busy summer.

The Dutch tactician said: “We are always in the market but it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria and we will do what we can to bring that player in that we need.”
