Mohamed Salah put the Reds 1-0 up after five minutes to continue Klopp’s men’s good form during their mid-season break.

But Milan’s Saelmaekers equalised with aplomb soon after.

  • Liverpool 1-1 AC Milan

    31. While Robertson’s defending will be spotlighted for that equaliser, it was an impressive run from the Belgian.

It makes his final omission from Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad even more baffling now.

  • Liverpool 1-1 AC Milan

    29. Liverpool are caught cold immediately after the drinks break!

Milan work the ball nicely down the left touchline, and then switch it out to the right with a crisp crossfield ball.

Andy Robertson could – and probably should – cut it own, but mistimes his header, allowing the ball to land at the feet of Alexis Saelemaekers.

The Belgian winger drives into the box from the flank, drops a shoulder, and fires a low effort beyond Caoimhin Kelleher into the far corner.

The epitome of against the run of play.

  • Equaliser!

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    26. An on-field drinks break comes at a good time for AC Milan.

A chance for Stefano Pioli and his team to regroup.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    25. Clever passing just inside the area – reminiscent of their earlier goal – ends with Thiago driving one wide from 20 yards.

Milan are hanging on in there – just.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    24. Three Liverpool players stand over the set-piece, and work it short for Salah to strike.

By the time the Egyptian hits it, however, Adli is on the scene to block.

It’s unfathomable to think that the young Frenchman was the full ten yards when that free-kick began.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    22. Upfield inexplicably in a centre-forward role, Milner receives a clever pass from Elliott.

The 36-year-old then does what he does best in battling away against the odds.

Surrounded by three Milan defenders, he promptly wins a free-kick off Gabbia in a dangerous position.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    20. After a spell of intricate passing, Oxlade-Chamberlain decides to take charge with a long ranger.

“Nobody hits a ball cleaner than Oxlade-Chamberlain,” notes the co-commentator, just as he scruffs wide from 25 yards.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    18. Liverpool continue to press high as they take the game to their opponents.

While Jurgen Klopp will have noted the two occasions that Milan have broken in behind his defence, he must be pleased with how his side have started.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    16. Thiago flies in with another crunching tackle in midfield.

He’s certainly not holding back ahead of the return of competitive domestic football.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    14. A lovely flick from Oxlade-Chamberlain sits nicely for Salah 25 yards from goal.

Liverpool’s goalscorer goes looking for his second with a low left-footed curler, but Mirante gets down comfortably to save.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    13. A robust challenge from Thiago on Saelemaekers goes unpunished by the referee.

Milan’s Belgian midfielder can’t quite believe he hasn’t won a free-kick in the attacking third there.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    11. The Italians cut through the Liverpool lines again on the right before a combination of Gomez and Robertson scramble back to clear.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    9. A lovely touch and turn from Bajcetic catches the eye.

Not least the eye of a senior Milan midfielder, who promptly chops the youngster down.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    7. The crowd have been treated to a superb first goal, but the ease with which Liverpool cut Milan open will be a concern for the boss Stefano Pioli.

  • Liverpool 1-0 AC Milan

    5. A glorious opener for Liverpool!

Joel Matip steps out of defence and brings the ball forward with ease past a crowd of static Milan players.

The centre-back exchanges passes with Roberto Firmino on the edge of the penalty area, and then slips one left to Mo Salah.

The Egyptian doesn’t rush, and instead sits down Antonio Mirante before rolling the ball into an inviting net.

What a start for the Reds!

  • An explosive start!

  • Liverpool 0-0 AC Milan

    3. Undeterred, Liverpool hit back with Milner moving down the right.

The veteran delivers his cross early, and only alert defending denies Firmino from latching on to it on the edge of the area.

  • Liverpool 0-0 AC Milan

    2. I was in the process of writing about Liverpool’s strong start in the opening seconds, but in the blink of an eye Lazetic raced clear at the other end.

The Milan striker opted to take his shot on goal earlier, and dragged it disappointingly wide of the Kelleher’s post.

  • Kick-off: Liverpool v AC Milan

    1. After a minute’s silence in memory of Sinisa Mihajlovic, the action gets underway.

Both teams are also wearing black armbands as a tribute to the Serbian legend, and former Milan manager.

  • Here come the two teams!

It may be a freezing afternoon back home, but it’s another balmy evening in Dubai.

It’s just before 7.30pm local time as the players of Liverpool and AC Milan make their way out on to the pitch at the Al-Maktoum Stadium.

There’s a good crowd in for this final fixture in the Dubai Super Cup, and the Liverpool fans that have made the journey are even treated to a blast of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” over the speaker system.

James Milner captains the Reds (playing in white tonight), and greets opposing skipper Ante Rebic on halfway for the formalities.

    Kick-off comes next.

  • No Origi in Milan squad

AC Milan (4-2-3-1): Mirante; Kalulu, Thiaw, Gabbia, Pobega; Krunic, Tonali; Saelemaekers, Adli, Rebic; Lazetic.

Subs: Jungdal, Tatarusanu, Bakoune, Bozzolan, Simic, Bakayoko, Bennacer, Vranckx, El Hilali.

  • Klopp wants ‘a proper shift’

With six days to go before the domestic season reconvenes, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed that today’s game is the perfect opportunity for some competitive football.

The German coach also confirmed that Darwin Nunez will play some part from the bench after returning from World Cup duty with Uruguay.

It’s about building on the first half that we played [against Lyon]. We want to be super lively on the ball, flexible on the ball, and put a proper shift in. It’s about getting minutes in the legs.

  • Gunners triumph in Dubai

Arsenal were crowned champions of this year’s Dubai Super Cup on Tuesday after defeating AC Milan.

The Gunners also took the bonus point in the penalty shootout that followed to finish with the maximum eight points from their two games.

With Liverpool also losing their opener – 3-1 against Lyon – this afternoon’s closing game between the Reds and the Rossoneri is a race to avoid finishing with the wooden spoon.

Subs: Adrian, Davies, Keita, Tsimikas, Nunez, Carvalho, Clark, Phillips, Doak, Cain, Quansah, Corness, Chambers, Frauendorf.
