David De Gea ‘willing to cut his £375,000-a-week wages to sign new Man Utd contract with deal running out’

De Gea, 31, has been at United since 2011 after a £19million move from Atletico Madrid.

But his current deal expires in 2023, and talks are yet to commence over an extension.

De Gea’s contract has an option which would take it to 2024.

However, that would see United continue to pay his £375k weekly wage.

And it’s believed Red Devils chiefs are hesitant to continue forking out the huge sum.

The Athletic now claims De Gea is ready to take action himself in order to remain in the north-west.

They say the gloveman is “open” to accepting reduced terms on a brand new deal, sealing his future at United for at least one more year.

De Gea is currently in his 12th season at the Theatre of Dreams.

And his strong form suggests he has no plans to slow down.

Indeed, boss Erik ten Hag wants to De Gea remain after delighting in his recent performances.

And talks on a deal could commence once the season is back underway following the World Cup.

Ten Hag said: “We said first we are focusing on the games but when we come to an end with this block, we have the World Cup and then we have to think about [his contract].

“In the background we have our strategies for how to deal with it.

“It is clear already and I have already emphasised it several times.
