Arsenal fans left fuming after being denied ‘clear’ penalty after 20 seconds… before Gabriel gaffe gifts Wolves lead

ARSENAL fans were left fuming after being denied a ‘clear’ penalty just 20 seconds into their clash with Wolves.

As Bukayo Saka let the ball run across him in the box, it fell to Gabriel Martinelli.

But with the Brazilian appearing to be taken out by full-back Nelson Semedo, Arsenal players and fans alike called for a spot-kick.

Only their pleas were ignored, leaving supporters on Twitter fuming.

One posted: “Yes, that should have been a penalty for Arsenal after Semedo takes out Martinelli and completely misses the ball.”

Another added: “Semedo misses the ball and takes out Martinelli. No penalty. No pausing the game for a VAR check.

“But then they spend 2 minutes checking the Wolves offside goal that you could see was clearly offside from the initial viewing.

“Typical Premier League use of VAR.”

A fan wrote: “Martinelli has position and Semedo completely takes him out without touching the ball… how is this not a clear penalty?”

Another added: “Denied a clear penalty and then Gabriel does that. Quality.”

Things worsened for Arsenal only ten minutes later when winger Hwang Hee-chan opened the lead for Wolves.

Gabriel’s horror back pass to keeper Aaron Ramsdale was intercepted by Hwang, who slotted home.

But Arsenal had the last laugh by turning the game around, following Nicolas Pepe’s equaliser and Alexandre Lacazette’s winner.
