Fans raise more than £6k for lad who wrote touching note & gave 26p to favourite player – so now he can go to a game

FOOTBALL fans have raised more than £6,000 for a lad who wrote a touching note and gave 26p to his favourite player.

The money raised by supporters means footie fan Joe, six, can now go to watch a Swindon Town FC game for himself.

He sent a letter to the club in Wiltshire saying how he would love to cheer on his club but his mum “has no money for food”.

And he taped 26p, asking for it to be given to forward Harry McKirdy, 24.

More than 500 fans of clubs including Liverpool, Man City and Cardiff City donated up to £50 each for Joe in the hope he is found.

Liverpool fan Niamh Denehan, nine, gave Joe her £5 pocket money for the week, writing: “Hope you play for your favourite team some day.”

Lyn Sutherland gave a tenner and wrote: “Hope you have the best day Joe when you get to watch your team play.

“Your mummy has brought you up very well, proof that love and affection is what matters.”

Ross Turner, who gave £50, said Joe’s letter melted his heart, adding: “It’s during times like this that makes football so special. What a lovely lad.”

Joe’s letter read: “Mummy doesn’t have any money to come to Swindon games because she has no money for food and has to pay for my dinner at school.

“I like Swindon Town Harry McKirdy. I will come one day.

“Joe Aged 6 ½.”

Attached was 20p, 5p 1p coins which were “for Harry”.

Now the club is trying to find the six-year-old and are asking fans for their help.

The fundraising page, set up by Mark Bevan, reads: “Swindon Town FC have been contacted by a young boy called Joe who unfortunately doesn’t have the privileges of being able to attend football matches!

“This is where football comes together.

“Lets all get together and fund for Joe & his family to attend a game & for Joe to be mascot for the day giving him an experience for life!”
