Mason Greenwood given NO compensation after Nike dropped striker over rape allegations – but Man Utd will still pay him

MASON Greenwood received no compensation when he was dropped from his Nike sponsorship deal after his rape arrest.

The Man Utd striker was axed by the sportswear giant, who provided his boots, earlier this month.

A clause in the deal means Nike were able to cut him completely without shelling out a penny in compensation, the Daily Mail reports.

It is understood this is due to reputational damage and loss of commercial value.

Greenwood, who was due to sign an improved contract with Nike next year, was initially suspended after his arrest on suspicion of rape, GBH, sexual assault and making threats to kill.

They then dropped him completely, saying: “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete”.

Greenwood has worn Nike boots since breaking into United’s first team in 2019.

The striker was also dropped from EA’s FIFA 22 after the allegations came to light.

He still receives his £75,000-a-week salary from Utd pending the outcome of any criminal proceedings.

Utd initially said it did “not condone violence of any kind,” but later suspended Greenwood after cops launched a probe.

A second statement confirmed: “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”

All merchandise bearing the No11’s name has been dropped from the official Utd site in the wake of the allegations and teammates have unfollowed him on Instagram.

Greenwood spent three nights in custody after police swooped on his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester.

He was bailed pending further investigation on February 2.

RAPE ARREST

Greenwood’s promising domestic and international career is now in jeopardy after his arrest.

The rising star has impressed on the pitch this season – scoring five goals in the Premier League and one in the Champions League so far.

He joined the team aged just six and rose through the ranks to land himself a regular spot on the first team.

In 2019, he became the youngest footballer to play for Utd in the Champions League when he took the pitch aged 17.

Greenwood has made 129 appearances in total for the Red Devils and netted 35 goals.

In 2020, England manager Gareth Southgate gave the 20-year-old his first cap when Greenwood came off the bench in a 1-0 win against Iceland.
