JAMIE CARRAGHER brutally mocked Roy Keane following Manchester United’s FA Cup exit to Middlesbrough.

That’s after Keane claimed Cristiano Ronaldo had returned to Old Trafford to win the famous trophy during a blazing row with Carragher on live TV.

Ronaldo missed a penalty and spurned several other good chances as United were dumped out by Boro in a tense shoot-out at Old Trafford.

With the Red Devils already out of the Premier League title race and facing a tough task in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid, most had been expecting them to cruise past Championship side Middlesbrough.

And former Liverpool man Carragher could not resist having a pop at United legend Keane following their on-air argument over Ronaldo’s transfer in November.

Carragher tweeted: “Roy Keane told me Man Utd had signed Ronaldo to win the FA Cup (shrug emoji).”

The pundit’s cheeky comment came a few months after he tangled with Keane in the Sky Sports’ studio following United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Responding to Keane criticising the decision to sub Ronaldo off after an hour, Carragher asked: “Why did Man United sign Cristiano Ronaldo? They signed him to stop him going to Man City. There was no plan to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.”

This saw Keane retort: “He was always going to play, he wasn’t coming back to Man United to stop him going to Man City but sit on the bench.”

Carragher then responded: “Are United closer to the league title than they were last season? No. You speak about goal scorers, you bring your own input to the team, but it’s a team game”

Yet Keane fired back: “It’s the FA Cup and getting in the Champions League. They’ve got to next round of the Champions League, how much is that worth to the club? If you’re looking at the business side of it, that’s why he’s come back.”

However, Carragher had the final word, adding: “When you sign Ronaldo at 36, it’s not to win in four years. If you sign someone at 36 or 37 it’s to win right now.

“If you sign Varane, a four-time Champions League winner, a World Cup winner right now. Are they any closer to winning?”
