Ismaila Sarr stepped up, but saw his effort saved by David De Gea.
Kiko Femenia tucked home the rebound, but VAR found him to have encroached so it had to be taken again.
De Gea saved from Sarr again, but Watford eventually got their goal.
King put Watford in front after good work from Emmanuel Dennis, before Sarr doubled the lead after being afforded acres of space in the Manchester United box.
STAT ATTACK
Manchester United allowed Watford to have ELEVEN shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Meanwhile the Hornets restricted United to just two total efforts, with one on target.
