ERIC BAILLY created an unfortunate piece of history at the start of the Manchester derby as he comically turned the ball into his own net to give Man City the lead in a 2-0 defeat.
A cross from the left-hand side was inadvertently tucked away by the outstretched Bailly as the visitors took a seventh minute lead at Old Trafford.
It is the first own goal a United player has ever scored in the Manchester derby.
And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took no prisoners as Bailly was replaced at half-time by Jadon Sancho.
Reacting to the moment of madness, a depleted Gary Neville simply said: “The switch of play was always going to be the concern and those Manchester City fans know how big a moment that is.
“Eric Bailly, it’s a bad moment.
“That switch of play to the other side is always a challenge with this system.
“Cancelo just puts it back into an area. It’s really rash from Eric Bailly. He has to get in that near post position, stop that ball getting across, shift his feet quicker.
“It’s poor defending and a poor start.”
The shocking moment from Bailly comes just days after he put in a sensational display during Man Utd’s 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League.
But he was left all at sea early on as a back three of Bailly, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were carved open with Man City’s first meaningful attack.
The early goal will bring back terrible recent memories for United as they lost their last home game 5-0 to Liverpool.
Solskjaer’s side have not won a Prem game at Old Trafford since September.
The Red Devils have failed to beat Aston Villa, Everton and Liverpool during an incredibly difficult run of results for the Norwegian boss.
And things could not have started much worse for him on Saturday lunchtime when Bailly sliced the ball beyond David de Gea.

It was a horror opening 20 minutes for Man Utd as City played the ball around with ease, attacking at will.
They doubled their lead through Bernardo Silva on the stroke of half-time and then saw the game out with ease, winning 2-0 at a canter.
Man City are now six points clear of rivals United and just two behind table toppers Chelsea.
