Chelsea striker Timo Werner slammed as ‘pathetic’ for lack of confidence by Dutch legends Van Basten and Gullit

TIMO WERNER has come in for scathing attacks from Dutch legends Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit.

The Chelsea striker scored 12 goals last season following a £47million move from Stuttgart, helping the Blues win the Champions League.

However the German international came under fire after failing to live up to expectations.

Werner has since lost his first-team place following Romelu Lukaku’s triumphant £97.5m return to Stamford Bridge.

Former Holland striker Van Basten has now told Dutch TV he was at least 18 TIMES better than Werner.

And ex-Chelsea boss Gullit said the 25-year-old’s lack of confidence is “pathetic.”

The two Euro 1988 stars appeared on Ziggo Sport’s football show Rondo, with presenter Sierd de Vos suggesting MVB was 18 times better than the Blues striker.

Van Basten replied: “At the very least. I think that’s actually modest on my part.”

Gullit added: “I can confirm that. It is almost pathetic to see.

“You can see that Werner has no self-confidence.

“As a manager you can see he always gets into good positions. He just needs to put one of his chances away.”

Van Basten then twisted the knife, declaring: “He is simply not good enough for the top level.”

Gullit spent two years as Chelsea player-manager before being replaced by Gianluca Vialli in 1998.
