Moment Robbie Savage breaks up massive ‘football hooligan’ brawl at match between Macclesfield and Congleton

THIS is the moment Robbie Savage broke up a massive “football hooligan” brawl at a match between Macclesfield and Congleton.

The former Derby County and Leicester City midfielder was seen stepping into the carnage at Macclesfield Football Stadium on Monday to try and break up the chaos.

The 46-year-old was seen trying to pull a man dressed in a green jacket away from the mass brawl as rowdy fans threw punches and hurled beer at each other during the North West Counties League game.

In a clip posted on social media, Savage was spotted racing across the pitch to break up the fight as shocked supporters and players looked on.

The caption read: “Savage to the rescue.”

Fans heaped praise on Savage for trying to break up the brawl.

One said: “Absolute scenes at El Cheshico. Full on kick off. Game stopped. Robbie Savage wading in appealing to fans. Brilliant.”

Another said: “Big up Robbie Savage for going into the fighting crowd to calm it downs absolute legend!”

A spokesman for Savage said he was “keen” to put a stop to the violence.

He told The Sun Online: “Robbie being part owner of the Football Club was keen to break up the small selection of fans who were being aggressive to ensure the game finished without any violence.

“He hopes everyone got home safely.”

He added: “It was a fantastic occasion for Macclesfield Football Club today with over 3500 fans back in the stadium.”

Savage had tweeted earlier on Sunday: “Incredible that only 3 teams in league 2 on Saturday and 4 in national league had a bigger attendance than @thesilkmen will get today, meaning that we will have the 8th biggest today from league 2 down on this bank holiday weekend at step 5 of football.”

‘DISGRACEFUL’

Images from the ground showed yellow smoke bombs being let off shortly before kick off this afternoon – an early indicator of the trouble which played out.

Footage showed the players trying to calm the crowd following Congleton’s 1-0 loss to their local rivals.

One spectator said: “At first supporters were just throwing cans, and there were smoke bombs about 20 minutes before kick off.

“Then they all just kind of rushed each other.”

Fans slammed the “disgraceful” scenes and criticised the lack of police presence at the match.

One said: “I’ve been going to watch Macc since 1987 and I’ve never seen such disgraceful scenes. Who’s decision was in NOT to segregate today?

“Where was the police presence? Very naive of the club not to expect that there would be some mindless idiots out to cause trouble today.”

Another said: “Macclesfield fans. Who’s causing the trouble here? This is disgraceful. This is why some fans are put off going because a group of teenagers think it’s ok to fight in a football stadium. It is NOT ok.”

The Sun has contacted Cheshire Constabulary for comment.
