But after snubbing another one of his old sides in Watford, as well as Burnley, he has penned a one-year deal at Villa Park a decade after departing for Manchester United.

The former England international, who helped Inter to the Serie A title last season, said: “It feels amazing to be back, it feels like I’ve not left.

“I’m just delighted to be back, seeing some old faces, being back at the training ground, seeing the facilities and how well they’ve grown.

“You can see how much the club has evolved since my time and I’m just ready to get down to work now.”

Young spent five years at Villa, making 190 appearances and scoring 38 goals during that period.

The ace left in a £17m deal for Old Trafford in 2011 and won the Premier League title with the Red Devils.

He moved from United to Italy with Inter in January 2020 and helped them to end their 11-year wait to win the league last term.

Despite that triumph, Inter face a huge summer of financial uncertainty with several stars set to leave, leading to Young rejecting two contract offers to stay.

That led to a flurry from the Prem for his signature, but it is Villa who have won the race.

Boss Dean Smith said: “Ashley brings with him a wealth of experience of top-level football both at club and international level and he is joining having just won a league championship in Italy.

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions and, having spoken to him at length, I know he is determined to make a real impact with us this season.”

Villa have already completed the signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City this summer.
