KEVIN DE BRUYNE hailed Manchester City’s U-turn on the European Super League with a heartfelt post on social media – while team-mate Raheem Sterling also saluted its demise

De Bruyne, 29, followed boss Pep Guardiola in condemning it before the club joined Chelsea in pulling out of an attempted breakaway competition.

The City attacker said: “This man comes out of a little town out of Belgium dreaming of playing at the highest stage possible.

“I’ve worked and competed against everybody trying to win the ultimate.
“But the most important word is COMPETING.

“We know this is a big business and I know I am part of this business.

“Let’s keep inspiring the next generation of footballers and keep the fans dreaming.”

Prime minister Boris Johnson praised Chelsea and Manchester City for quitting the ESL.

He said the pair had made “absolutely right decision” and called on the four remaining English clubs to follow their example.

And as other clubs seemed certain to do the same, Johnson added: “I hope the other clubs involved in the European Super League will follow their lead.”

The FA and Uefa also praised City for backing out.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne has been ruled out of Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa but a scan showed no major damage.
