Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney claims Aguero will be ‘missed’ with City superstar set for free transfer in summer

WAYNE ROONEY believes outgoing Sergio Aguero will be sorely missed by Manchester City – and the Premier League too if he quits England.

Derby County boss Rooney is the 253-goal record scorer for neighbours Man Utd, while Aguero has City’s highest tally ever – 257 from 175 fewer games.

United and Barcelona are among five clubs who have reportedly already made Argentina striker Aguero, 32, a contract offer for next season.

And although Aguero’s ability to shake off injuries has been questioned this season, Rooney still rates him one of the modern greats.

Former England skipper Rooney told Sky Sports: “An outstanding player. He’s been an absolute revelation in the Premier League, one of the best strikers in the world.

“His goal ratio is incredible and I’m sure he will be missed at Manchester City and I’m sure the Premier League will miss a player of his quality.

“So from my point of view I’d just like to congratulate him on his career over here.

“Whether he stays in England or not obviously I don’t know, but he’s certainly had a fantastic career at Manchester City.”

Aguero is said to favour a free transfer to Barcelona, but Lyon frontman Memphis Depay is regarded as Nou Camp chief Ronald Koeman’s priority.

And Holland ace Depay, 27, has declined to extend his deal with the French giants beyond this summer, knowing of Barca’s interest.

Aguero, meanwhile, would need at least another Prem season if he hopes to overhaul Rooney in the list of all-time scorers in the top-flight.

The former Atletico Madrid star is fourth on the list with 181 goals, behind 187 for ex-United goal-getter Andy Cole’ and Rooney’s 208.

Alan Shearer is out on his own with 260 for Southampton, Blackburn and home-town club Newcastle, having famously turned Sir Alex Ferguson and United down.
