Paul Scholes fears ‘timid’ De Gea has lost his presence and ‘almost jumped out the way’ for Everton equaliser vs Man Utd

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes believes David de Gea looks ‘timid’ amid concerns of his form.

The Spanish goalkeeper had a poor game during the 3-3 draw with Everton and was at fault for the first and third goals.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Scholes said: “I think the goalkeeper could be becoming a bit of a problem.

“I think that belief is going a little bit. He looks a little bit timid, he looks like he’s losing his presence.”

Everton secured a point at Old Trafford thanks to Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last-minute equaliser.

Harry Maguire played the England striker onside, but de Gea reacted slowly to the danger and Scholes was not impressed.

The 46-year-old said: “He didn’t really get in the face of Calvert-Lewin, he almost jumped out the way and made it a little bit easier for him than it should have been.

“He possibly wouldn’t have saved it anyway but at least try, at least show a bit of braveness about it.”

De Gea didn’t cover himself in glory for the opening goal either, palming a soft cross from Calvert-Lewin straight to Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The Spain international has kept eight clean sheets this season but has also made four errors leading to goals.

He’s been defended by United boss Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer, although there’s no guarantee he’ll remain his first choice with the impressive Dean Henderson waiting in the wings.

The 23-year-old kept 13 clean sheets during his loan spell at Sheffield United last season.

And Scholes isn’t the only United legend to question de Gea’s recent performances.

Gary Neville also believes the Spain international was at fault for Everton’s equaliser.

Henderson is likely to feature in United’s next game as they face West Ham in the FA Cup on Tuesday.
