The war veteran, who raised £32million, sadly died on Tuesday aged 100 following a battle with Covid and pneumonia.

Brits tonight took to their doorsteps to celebrate Captain Tom’s legacy and the tens of millions he raised.

Burnley and City players gathered around the centre circle before their 6pm kick-off at Turf Moor to give Captain Tom a hand.

And there were similar scenes at Craven Cottage as Fulham welcomed Leicester to their home.

Outside of football, Prime Minister Boris Johnson led the clapping from outside 10 Downing Street.

Captain Tom’s family also joined in the poignant moment to honour his life.

The PM called on Brits to replicate their efforts of the first lockdown by applauding Captain Tom and NHS workers on the Covid frontline.

Mr Johnson said: “Let’s clap together for Captain Tom at 6pm.

“Let’s clap for the spirit of optimism he stood for, but let’s also clap for all those he campaigned for, the brilliant NHS staff and care workers.”

A minute’s silence was also held in the House of Commons for the war veteran and all those who have died during the pandemic.

Captain Tom’s family tweeted that they were ‘incredibly touched’ by the nation’s act of remembrance.
