John Stones scores calamitous own goal vs Man Utd… before linesman spares City defender’s blushes

JOHN STONES had his blushes spared by a linesman’s flag after the Manchester City defender looked to have scored an own-goal against fierce rivals United.

And his luck was REALLY in during the clash against their near-neighbours when he scored the game’s opening goal in the early stages of the second half.

With just two minutes on the clock the ball was played in to United striker Marcus Rashford.

He fired at goal only to see rookie keeper Zack Steffen make a superb block.

But the ball flew back at Stones and rebounded off the centre half and into the goal.

But the linesman deemed Rashford to be offside and the goal was ruled out.

VAR made their regulatory check to confirm the decision was a correct one.

The two rivals are clashing in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford tonight.

The winners will face Tottenham in the final after they beat Championship side Brentford 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden went on to also have goals ruled out for offside in the first half.

The two teams were tied at 0-0 at the break – but both had many chances to go ahead.

Kevin De Bruyne rattled the crossbar, while for United Bruno Fernandes saw a long-range effort expertly tipped wide by Steffen.

But Stones was celebrating at the start of the second half when he bundled the ball into the RIGHT goal.

The defender got on the end of Phil Foden’s free-kick to put City into a 1-0 lead.
